Playing The Angel - Depeche Mode
by jeffjen - written on 10/08/09 (Very useful, 114 readings)
Rating:
of many instruments and backing vocals Martin Gore took over the song-writing with the single See You back in 1982, and proved the critics wrong who said Depeche Mode would fall apart without Vince! Without Vince Clarke, the band went on to explore their darker side, writing more meaningful songs with often deep and dark lyrics, and I have to say after seeing them live on three occasions, they are a really good live act. They have produced some classic albums such as Violator, Ultra, Black Celebration,and Songs of Faith and Devotion. So when the band produced their 10th studio album Exciter in 2001, I rushed out to buy it without hesitation, but was left quite ...

Note: originally written for my review website, ShaunMunro.co.uk, thanks! ~~~ #1: In Chains ========== Depeche Mode s album kicks off in jarring, almost droning fashion. A slow-rise leaves one feeling a little impatient, but once the vocals kick in, followed by some minimalist lead guitar and melodic bass, all fear abates. A moody, brooding track that, at almost seven minutes, could very well have outstayed its welcome, yet the enticing vocal work and gripping bass make this one an addictive, entrancing listen - 8/10 #2: Hole to Feed ============= A relentless drum beat from the outset makes this another memorable track, accompanied by some impassioned vocals on both ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INTRO (or Musings for the Masses) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First of all a confession. I am a dyed in the wool Depeche Mode (DM) fan, and have been since I first listened to Some Great Reward in 1984 - the album that featured the hit international single "People Are People" and announced DM s arrival to a wider public. I could probably string together entire conversations consisting of DM lyrics, and am sad enough to admit that me, and my cousin - a fellow devotee, have done so on one or two less than sober occasions. At least three DM albums would make my top ten desert island discs. As such, this review must come with a word of ...
Cool concept idea, some catchy beats
Vocals a bit ponsy and music a bit high pitch at times
The Great Work - Centurions Ghost
The Chemistry Of Common Life - Fucked Up
Some pretty unique sounds going on
Will probably not please regular hardcore or regular rock fans
Matter + Form - VNV Nation
Stunning production, uplifting lyrics, an album that defines a genre.
Quite a few instrumentals, which may turn some people off.
The Call Of The Wretched Sea - Ahab
Pop - 2006
I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose - Bombay Bicycle Club
Unique, new, catchy
Not everyones taste
Un - Dan Black
None
Absolutely terrible - awful lyrics, terrible vocals, boring ripped off music
Tears Of Mortal Solitude - Forest Stream
Some good guitar work, melancholy and reflective atmosphere,
Not very original, over-polished production, sounds bland in places, unimaginative drums
First Love - Karina
Great material, great potential
A couple of weaker links
