The soundtrack from the film of the 1987 Roddy Doyle book. As the cynic inside me protests that there is some severe milking going on here, the voice of reason waggles a cautionary finger. It argues that the film was fundamentally based around music - soul music to be precise- and the actors used were chosen for their competency as musicians ahead of their Thespian leanings. So let us snap on a rubber glove, squeeze the teat of the Commitments cow and see if the music stands alone, proud and redolent, at peace with itself as a true entity of entertainment. Or has our love for a hugely enjoyable film jaundiced our view and thrown a glittering mask ... Read the complete review

In 1987, Roddy Doyle wrote the first in his 'Barrytown' trilogy. It was entitled The Commitments and was made into a film in 1991. The film takes us on the musical journey of a group of people who meet under the guidance of Jimmy Rabbite, united by their shared love of music, hoping to make it big in the music world. The plot is very good, and the music fits it perfectly, featuring some original music as well as some excellently performed covers. The soundtrack to the film was immensely popular on release. My parents bought it almost immediately, and I loved listening to it, as well as watching the film once I got round to it. The tracks flow effortlessly into ... Read the complete review

Earlier today when I was going through all my old CDs trying to decide which ones to get rid of I found the soundtrack to the movie The Commitments and that instantly took me back more than ten years. The movie with the same name (which in turn is based on a novel by the famous Irish writer Roddy Doyle) is about a group of young people in Ireland who decide to put a band together, and even though this is not a review about the film it is near impossible to write a review of the soundtrack without mentioning the film, especially in this case as the film and the music are so closely connected. One of the things that made The Commitments such a ... Read the complete review

Commitments is a superb movie set in Ireland with a group of people trying to start a band. The Manager, who tries extrememly hard to calm his group down is beaten when the lead singer Andy Strong intakes too much liquer and the outsider saxaphone player ends up dating all the female backing singers. So as you can imagine, things got a bit sticky. The album itself is absolutely brilliant, songs like 'Chain of Fools' is a song that will be played repeatedly. (Chay, chay, chay-e-yay-e-yay-yeah.. chain of fooools..remember the one?) The songs are rythym and blues based, and I can assure you that you will not regret purchasing the ... When i first saw the Commitments movie, which was about a group of Irish people trying to form a band, i decided i had to go out and buy the soundtrack. I did find it quite difficult to get it on cassette, but i eventually got a copy for £9.99. It features every track from the hit film, such as Mustang Sally, Mr pitiful, Chain of fools and my very favourite Try a little tenderness, i can play this song over and over. Andrew Strong the lead singer has such an incredibly powerful voice and i,m sure he could go far. This tape is of a soul genre, but could be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates good music, it's a very lively album, ... Read the complete review
