... it's music for musicians perhaps! Highlights on the album include the strong opener "Head Lock", with it's seamless blend of gritty hard synths and gentle, sweeping vocals. "Hide and Seek" is fantastic - I could probably write a review on that one song. Imogen performs this multi-vocal piece live with the aid of a vocoder - an electronic keyboard instrument that samples then reproduces sound at different pitches. The upshot of this is that Imogen can sing a note into the vocoder and the mac...more

Premium Review Speak For Yourself - Imogen Heap: Let Go, Jump In (584 words)

Rating:

As a school girl, Imogen Heap was disliked by her music teacher. As punishment, Imogen was banished to the music room to work alone. Without that fearsome music teacher, we may not have the artist we see (and hear) today. Imogen Heap writes, produces and performs a style of music which can best be described as vocally-led electronica. It's generally light, but not necessarily "easy listening" in the convential sense. Heap incorporates complex drum loops, unusual instruments (including vocoders and thumb pianos) and her unique vocal style to create highly melodic, slightly schizophrenic pop music. Many tracks on "Speak for Yourself" flow ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Originality Is Never A Bad Thing (738 words)

**THE ARTIST** Imogen Heap is an award winning singer/songwriter from London, UK, formerly of electronic duo Frou Frou. Not only is she a massively talented vocalist, she is also gifted in an array of instruments including guitar, drums, piano and clarinet. She is a classically trained artist and music has been a huge part of her life, although she is classically trained, her style of music is an eclectic mix of electronic, indie, alternative to name just a few! Until 1998 Imogen was part of the duo Frou Frou but in 1998 she released her debut solo album. Although she is not a very well known artist, she is amazing and does have a very dedicated fan base. Her songs ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

Imogen Heap is an English songwriter, who was originally part of the band Frou Frou who sang 'Let Go' which was used in The Garden State and many other films since. Imogen Heap's style isn't mainstream, she focuses on synthetic sounds and a lot of piano. Her voice is quite gritty in places, but she is a very talented singer. Incredible guitar performance from an overlooked and ill-fated musician. Nothing for the casual listener.
