      Disadvantages

Screamin Jay (Jalacy) Hawkins was a true musical Showman. On and off the stage, as his 57 plus children and 4 (or so) Marriages go to proove. I would guess that 75% of the popular music buying population own his biggest hit, and dont even know it - the much covered 'I PUT A SPELL ON YOU'. He has covered a couple (or more) Tom Waits songs (Frenzy, Heart attack & Vine) and been in a few Jim Jaramush (?) movies (Desk clerk in, er..mystery train or whatever it was called) But most people dont realise its a voodoo inspired drunken, love-torn rant from a womanising ex Champian Boxer! (Jay won the Golden gloves at middle weight in his teens). But enuff about the man, we can read about him elsewhere, On with the Album. Spells and Potions is the most Superior collection of Screamin Jays stuff I have yet too hear (as with all bluesmen there are a load of em). This focuses mainly on Jays early stuff, starting in the 1954-6 period. It is a two CD, 34 song afair and it spans the whole gamult of his style and back catalogue. If you like blues as it should be (Not the egotistical poncing about stuff) with influences from big band, then there is more than enuff to keep you happy. This cd tends to get played at least twice a week, and has done for the last 10 months. If you like the strange stuff (Tom Waits for instance) there is something for you, with all off Screamin' Jays voodoo grunting and howling keeping you going. THE CD's I would say Disk 1 is the Killer and two is the filler (way-hay the rhyme). But that is partly because I had been listing to a lot of disk two from the collection 'Alligator Wine' for a previous 12 months. Not anymore is track one and it throws us into Jays Screamin' from the start. Bliss. On CD one I would say that 'Not Anymore' 'Just Dont Care' 'All Night' 'Monkberry Moon (a song that has wonderful lyrics & seems to be about Tomato Ketchup
)' and 'Sweet Ginny(instrumental)' make the price worth it alone. CD 2 is much harder for the average listener but Well worth it still. Here we have the true 'I Put A Spell On You'. THere are some longer, BBKing length tunes on this side. THe gospel influenced 'Whats Gonna Happen On The 8'th Day' and the social Commentary of 'Same Damn Thing'. THe seminal toilet blues of 'Constipation Blues' is sure to impress, revolt stun and cause a grin, all at the same time. THE GOOD SIDE Its Screamin jay, Love it or Be Wrong. 90% of the songs are Classics, and Screamin Jay desrves to be heard. THe Bad Side Its screamin Jay, too hard for thick Teeny bopper only cretins to understand, too full of energy for maudlin pseudo-psycho analisers to comprehend. Conclusion. Buy it, you'll Like it. THa man influenced so many with his over the top stage show, the music is sometimes forgotten. THis is a real good way to remember a wide range of it, from a 50 year recording history. I am gonna stop now, as I could go on about the individual merits of all 30+ tracks.
