After Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ended on a distinctly somber note with the death of Spock, some doubts were raised as to the future of Star Trek. With Spock gone what point was there to go on? But in the studio hierarchy, it was seen that the time was proper for milking this cash cow for all its worth as Trek II had proven to be a real unexpected success and had in fact been an opening weekend record breaker at the box office.
