      Simply Red - Stars CD

      Stars - Simply Red

I wanna fall from the stars

Simply Red have been around for a long long time now but I think their music is still relevant and great. I think they are one of those bands who have fans of all ages due to their easy listening, non offensive type music. Apparently, according to an article I read, Simply Red got their name because it was the lead singer's (Mick Hucknall's) nickname due to his red hair. I never knew this fact but it does make sense! It does always make me laugh though at how he has such good luck with the ladies. I mean, I know he's a big music star and probably has loads of money but he really is rather weird looking in my opinion but always seems to date gorgeous women!

Simply Red's music is classified as soul music with influences from blue-eyed soul, new romantic, rock, jazz and lovers rock. I do find their music very smooth and quite sexy at times and definitely a great date night CD to have. I think it's because they are so easy to listen to that they have so many fans. Apparently they have sold over 50 million albums in a 25 year career, very impressive.

My favourite album of theirs is Stars as it contains a lot of my favourite songs of theirs. Stars is the fourth album from Simply Red and was released in 1991. Apparently when it was released it became the best-selling album for two years running in Europe and the UK. According to an article I read, in 2000 Q magazine placed Stars at number 80 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. I would have to agree with this as it tends to be one of the albums that everyone has in his or her collection.

Some of my favourite songs on this album include For your Babies and Stars. The rest of the songs on the album include:

      1. Something got me started
      2. Stars
      3. Thrill Me
      4. Your Mirror
      5. She's got it bad
      6. For your babies
      7. Model
      8. How could it fall
      9. Freedom
      10. Wonderland

        magical

When this album came out, the UK was literally going Simply Red mad, It was selling by the bucket load and everyone wanted to sleep with the gorgeous Mick Hucknall. From the minute you pick this up, you will be rewarded with some timeless pop songs and THAT voice.

        Who are they:

UK group who came to fame in the eighties. Fronted by the charismatic redhead Mick Hucknall.

        Highlights:

So many fine moments, but the fiery 'Something Got Me Started' is as good a place as any. A funky pop track with some excellent little hooks in it and a sterling vocal from Mick. It is about someone in Mick's life who manages to ignite his inner passions and make him fall at his knees. He sounds vulnerable, he sounds sexy and he sounds excited. A great start to the album.

More subdued and down to earth is the lovely 'Stars' which has a gentle melody, relaxing and soothing the senses. It is a love song, carried off with a reflective vocal performance and some wonderful drum work too.

Head to the beautiful 'For Your Babies' which is all rather cutesy and charming, possibly the sickliest lyrics, but the track will make you smile wryly and wish you were starting a family.

        Overall:

A fine album with the right balance of funky numbers, ballads and a good dose of pop running through it. Hucknall's vocals are as potent as ever and he really sells the album. The artwork is stylish and has some lovely shots on the sleeve.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

I have always been a fan of Simply Red, or more especially Mick Hucknall, as we grew up in the same area of Manchester, and now my son is about to go to the same school that he did, namely Audenshaw High School For Boys. When we went to have a look around the school I lingered a while in the music room, wondering if anything in that particular room gave him inspiration, if it did then I missed it! I have always enjoyed most of their stuff, especially the classic like Holding Back The Years, but my favourite CD just has to be Stars (and also the video for the title track!) The CD itself contains 10 really good songs, all sung in that sexy soulful voice, but my favourites are the up tempo “Something Got Me Started” the delightful “For your Babies” and the exceptional “Stars,”When I hear that track I just melt at the memory of the video of him walking barefooted in the desert with his longs red hair blowing in the breeze..! The tracks are timeless songs and I don’t believe even in years to come they will sound dated as the overwhelming sound on them is Micks voice, and a great voice never goes out of fashion.
