Advantages: A fantastic album consisting of many amazing tracks.

Disadvantages: At times hard to tell where one track finishes and the next begins.

'Start Something' is Welsh Rock band Lost Prophets successful second studio album which went Platinum in the UK having sold over a hundred thousand copies. A grand total of five singles were released from this album, four of which having reached the Top 20 in the UK, and the fifth and final having just missed out on reaching the Top 40, peaking at Number 42. The album is the least commercially successful of the three that the band have released with the other two classified Gold having both sold in excess of 200 000 copies in the UK alone. Although the album is the least commercially successful of the three that the band have released, it is by no means a bad album, in fact Lost Prophets are yet to release an album that I do not hold in high regard.

With a grand total of thirteen tracks present on this album, I would find it extremely difficult to find fault with any of them. Each is individually fantastic and all work together well as a part of the 'Start Something' album as a whole. I have always found the music of Lost Prophets quite addictive, and every time I purchase a new album of theirs I find myself listening to it over and over again for weeks. The 'Start Something' album was no exception to this rule; I bought it the day it was released in early 2004 and continued to crank it out of my stereo for months after.

Although every track is in effect a highlight given the top quality of the album, I would say that there are perhaps a few tracks present here that stand out a little better than others. Opening track 'We Still Kill The Old Way' for example is an extremely powerful opening for the album, beginning the album with a bang and really impressing with its mighty guitars, fine vocal technique and truly infectious chorus. Choruses seem to come naturally to Lost Prophets, a lot of those present on this album are sensational in fact - the number of ideas this band clearly have is quite unbelievable really.

One thing I love about this album is the seamless progression from track to track. Each track leads into the next, and although this may be a bit irritating when listening to the tracks singularly as there is a lead up to the next album track when the track you're listening to is coming to a close - when listening to 'Start Something' as an album as a whole this is something which works perfectly. It is a technique that has been used by numerous bands in recent years, one that works sometimes and falls flat others. I am glad it has worked so well here, the only problem I have with it is that sometimes you're not too sure where one track finishes and another begins.

I think that perhaps my favourite track on the album is the sublime lead single 'Burn, Burn'. The guitars and vocals make this track particularly pleasing and really do work well together on this one. Some cracking backing vocals are chucked in for good measure and everything just seems to fit together magnificently and make for an all in all well rounded and well structured track. It is obvious why this one was chosen as the first single to have been taken from the album, it is a magnificent piece of music and I for one certainly see it as one of the main highlights of the album. Elsewhere, stand out tracks for me come in the form of 'Goodbye Tonight', 'Last Summer', and penultimate track 'We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan'. Whilst 'We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan' is greatly powerful, 'Last Summer' provides some soothing and easy listening, and 'Goodbye Tonight' combines the two with moments of great power combining with with slower and softer ones outstandingly.

Lost Prophets second album for me is a great piece of music, an album that I can play time and time again without ever tiring of. Everything works exceptionally well together in the album and listening to 'Start Something' is therefore a great pleasure. Although when the band first emerged they were at times unfairly tagged in the genre of 'Nu-Metal', their sound has altered and changed over the years and with each new album the band just seem to be getting better and better at what they do. Although I am a massive fan of this 'Start Something' album, I was even more impressed with their 2006 follow up 'Liberation Transmission' and can't wait to hear what the band have to offer with their next studio album. I would strongly suggest you give this album a listen, and if you find yourself to be impressed with what you hear here, why not check out their other two also?

Summary: Lost Prophets 2004 release 'Start Something' is well worth checking out.

I still prefer their first album just for the title of Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja - two top notch vertical scrolling arcade games of the 1980s. And it's a great song to boot...
