Advantages: Amazingly different style of metal

Disadvantages: A few tracks sound quite similar towards the end

An impressive 4th release from the American metal band, this has a notable hardcore sound but with clean vocals at a time when harsh growls that aren't even properly delivered have taken over numerous genres. It would be foolish to label them as a hardcore band though as they are far more innovative.

The music is at full throttle from the beginning with some very intelligent guitar work, there's everything from doom riffs through to psychedelic sectios that ensure Kylesa's Static Tensions is like nothing else released this year yet but at the same time would surely appeal to more people than your average extreme metal band.

On top of the clean vocals, the track is fast paced and punky and you need to be well tuned in to catch all of the lyrics. Fortunately if you just want to switch off, musically it's intriguing enough to hold your attention despite a few songs in the middle of the album sounding a little similar.

Despite the band's unique sound, every track on this album is catchy with recognisable hooks that will have you drooling for more. Using two drummers may seem over the top but it really works and seems to add a great power to the album as they often play in unison. It's probably Kylesa's best album so far, likely one of the best metal albums this year and is definitely worth having.
