Advantages: good pop songs

Disadvantages: dated

You to have admire the New Kids for having the courage to come back in 2008 and try all over again at a stab at success. They managed to pull it off in the US, but the UK was just not warming to them.

Their 'Step By Step' album was the second full album release for the guys and has some decent pop tracks. The title song is great fun, with a hook laden chorus. All the guys get to showcase their singing here, though when Danny tries, it is screeching and horrendous. The song has some sassy lyrics and would please fans of Bros or early Five material.

'I Believe In You' is drenched to the hilt in sickly charm. I love to play it when I am feeling down and sorrowful. The vocals are handled with a tenderness and sincerity which I approve of.

Check out the sixties retro vibe of 'Tonight' which brings back memories of The Beatles. There are succulent chord changes and a rousing chorus which is all pomp and flourishing. The song stands up well to this day and is a triumphant pop track.

'Games' is less appealing, too urban and noisy for me, with rapping which does not not sit well, the guys are better delivering upfront pop songs. 'Call It What You Want' is better, with a dancey groove and plenty of energy to drive it.

'Happy Birthday' sees Jon take on vocals. It is incredibly sentimental and you might need a sick bag to hand for this song.

There are twelve tracks on the album, a good mixture of ballads and upbeat numbers. The cover artwork is sufficient, verging on the avant garde. This is a solid followup to their debut album and a must for pop music fans worldwide.

Summary: good fun
