Sorry I haven't been on so much lately. Boyfriends take up a lot of time. I read Stephen Gately's novel, Trees Of Seasons and it made me want to listen to his solo music. So I did and now I'm going to review it. I think we all know Stephen Gately for being co-lead singer of Boyzone with Ronan Keating. Aside from being an Irish pop star, he was also an actor, dancer and author. His tragic passing in 2009 came as a dreadful shock to a lot of people and the day the Daily Mail handled it provoked thousands of complaints. You can all look it up on Wikipedia if you want to know more, I'm going to get straight to business with this album.
I've owned this album for quite a while now. I bought it really cheap and I think the album sounds better than how I remembered it. I don't think I really remembered the album that much apart from the singles.
There's a lot of albums like this one to be honest, so it doesn't really stand out. It's natural for musicians to want to create their own solo work and it's even more common in the world of boybands and girlbands. It makes sense though, after years of hard work and being manufactured into a pop star, it's only natural that there's a need to express yourself and come out your shell and deliver more mature sound. For Stephen Gately I think it was a bit different because I think throughout his in boyzone and afterwards, he was always himself.
His death in 2009 came as a dreadful shock to a lot of people. He's best known for being the second lead singer of Boyzone along with Ronan Keating. He's also credited for being the first boyband member for coming out as gay. I'm surprised that this album didn't get more attention, but that's probably because he's done much more relevant stuff like Boyzone, his book and acting that people might have forgotten about the record. After all, the album was released in 2000, so it's understandable that a lot of people will be out with the old and in with the new.
These events have made a great effect on this album. Beforehand I've only listened to the listened to the singles of the album and now I've been listening to the album as a whole. I think his passing has made me appreciate this album a bit more.
I've always thought he was cool. I thought his vocals were sweet and really easy to listen to. I think that this is one of those albums that people think that you're a bit weird for liking, but you don't care because you think it's a nice album anyway. The music is good, but I will always remember this album for one reason. I bought it at cash converters a couple of years back and it still had the original buyer's receipt from HMV. The person paid around £13 whilst I only paid about a £1.
It was his debut and only solo album. I think it would have been nice if he did another solo album, but it seemed that there were other pursuits that interested Stephen more. What I like about this album is that comes across as personal without being cheesy. I think it's a good reflection of his personality.
New Beginning, the title track is the best for me. Sadly the rest of the album doesn't live up to this song, but I think it's a good album, but this track is great. I think the production is really nice because verse really builds up and the chorus makes a good impact.
The cover of Simon and Garfunkel's song Bright eyes surprised me because I thought it would be boring, but to my surprise it wasn't so bad. I kinda like the dreamy atmosphere of the original song more, but this one on this album is okay.
I think some other stand out tracks on here are I Believe and You Lied. They've got a cut above the rest because of the way they're produced. I think Stephen's voice sounds really great on these tracks particularly as well as highlight the lovely tones that made fans fall in love with him and Boyzone in the first place.
I wouldn't really say that this album is overrated or underrated. I think this album is worth trying out if you're a fan of Boyzone or a general pop fan. I think people who didn't grow up with Boyzone may find this album a little bit bland and unexciting. As for me, I like the album and although it shows his personality well, I think he's got much more superior work with Boyzone.
I am a very vague Boyzone fan - don't mind it and can listen to it quite happily!!! - but some people complain about Boyzone being bland - just get Stephen Gatelys album - then Boyzone will become innovative and amazing!!!! I think that this album just confirms the fact that the only talented person in Boyzone was Ronan Keating - and even when he has gone solo some of his songs weren't that amazing!! - This new album contains one good song - Bright Eyes and that is a total copy from the old song done years agao and i must say a hell of a lot better. You may at this point be wondering why i bought it - was in bargain bucket at Boots!!!! - and it deserved to be there too!! I am not a bitter Ronan fan because i don't think even he was any good but i wish the boy bands would stop splitting up and filling our air time with rubbish like they do. The only one i could describe as having a sucessful solo career is Robbie Williams but even he is going downhill lately!!!! Please lets start a campaign - to keep the boybands together because then at least we only get tortured by on esong and not by one song from each of the members!!!
I’m quite surprised that I am the first person writing about such a good album! However I do think that some of its success was due to the fact Stephen is part of Boyzone. Whenever a group member releases their own album to me it’s suggesting a split, but lets hope they have a good couple of year’s left! The album is titled “New Beginning” which is quite appropriate seeing as it’s his debut solo album. It comprises of 13 tracks all with their own meanings and tunes. There is a good balance between love songs and fast jumpy songs. The album has been out for a couple of months now and is available to buy in any good music shop, online or off! It has quite a distinct cover with Steve’s picture across the front and quite a bold title. The title is written with hollow bold letters and this is similar to the way his logo had been drawn which is a big S. Don’t worry if you think the album will be full of him singing at the top of his voice like he often does with Boyzone because he doesn’t! ***NEW BEGINNING*** This was his first solo song, and also matches with the title of the album. The words seem to have quite a meaning as it starts with “Seven years I’ve waited, Seven years of holding on, Always kept my faith in, Always knew this day would come.” It has a very catchy tune and is the kind of song that you would hum to yourself when doing the shopping! Another faster version has also been released on several albums and this one is probably more of the kind you could dance to. ***BELIEVE*** This is one of my favourite songs on the album, and I am hoping it will be up for release as his next single. The words are very meaningful, “I believe in love.” What else could we ask for in a song! It is a love song, however it has got a good kick behind it. The tune is simple and so easily remembered and the words also. At the end the tune changes slightly and in a
way it sounds as if he is summing up the song. Then the notes higher slightly for a great finish. It’s the kind of song you’d probably press repeat on! ***IF ONLY YOU WERE HERE*** I have to say I am not that keen on this song, however I’m probably just being fussy! I like the start and middle parts but not the chorus, as it’s a bit old fashioned sounding and a bit repetitive! But again the words are nice and if the chorus were slightly different it would be a great song. ***STAY*** This has got quite a catchy tune and everytime he says stay it is shouted which makes you copy this. I have found several times now that when I’ve been listening to my walkman I only shout this word out as I don’t know the rest of the words! ***WANNA BE WHERE YOU ARE*** This song is a bit faster than the others and the tune is slightly more upbeat. However on the downside it sounds more like an album filler than a number one does! ***WHERE DO WE GO*** This is a lovely song, he sings magnificently, the words are beautiful and the music fits perfectly for the mood. I have a feeling this will be one of the most popular songs as it has such a good meaning that so many people are faced with in life, what is the next step? ***JUDGEMENT DAY*** This is another of the quicker songs. It has a slightly different theme to the rest and is about judgement day! It had some cool noises at the beginning and the tune is very catchy even if the words aren’t! ***YOU LIED*** One of my favourite parts of this song is the nice twinkie piano parts at the beginning. The music is lovely, with a nice selection of different instruments. Steve’s singing is great on this song and he has a great combination of high and low notes to make it just right! ***FAR FROM LOVE*** This has a lovely wistley kind of tune at the beginning and is second favourite song on the album. It starts of w
ith a jumpy background noise and quite a steady pace with a nice beat that really gets you into it. The chorus is excellent as the verse builds up for it. This song has now been stuck in my head for the last month as it is so easy to remember, and the words are also meaningful. ***JUST CAN’T SAY GOODBYE*** This is one of the slower songs on the album which puts you into a really lovey dovey mood! It will speak out to a lot of people as he is singing about a broken relationship and how he doesn’t want it to end even though it’s full of problems. The pace is very slow and the words easy to pick up. ***DO WITHOUT ME*** I find this song the kind that you don’t particularly like that much but seems to hum it all the time anyway. This is probably as the chorus has numbers in, which are quite easy to remember so you remember the song too! ***COMING BACK*** This has quite an annoying tune and to be honest it is another of those horrible album filler songs. But saying that I’m sure someone will like it. And finally ***BRIGHT EYES*** This song is definitely not bad luck for him as it’s number 13. It has been written for one of the Disney movies and is lovely! GO OUT AND BUY THE ALBUM NOW!!!!!
