Surprise - Paul Simon
by sam1942 - written on 27/09/06 (Very useful, 919 readings)
Rating:
The intricate workings of a great legendary mind like Paul Simon still remains a mystery when we embark on the journey through his most recent album ‘Surprise.’ This extraordinary album must be first categorized and a myth must be dispelled. Since the incredible impact of the definitive ‘Graceland,’ way back it 1986, we have been left in limbo state, not far from the feeling of floating on a World Music trip so much to the extreme that his next three albums (Concert In The Park Live; November 1991, Songs From The Capeman; November 1997 and You‘re The One, October 2000) have quiet simply passed us by. So why was it that this album, quite ‘surprised’ us in 2006? What on ...

Anthology - Paul Simon

Rating:
for some years, and had even been to see his Graceland concert at the NEC in Birmingham. I owned most of the Simon & Garfunkel records, and quite a few Paul Simon solo ones too, but there were still excellent songs on this Anthology that I had not come across before, such as "Gone At Last" from the album "Still Crazy After All These Years". It was nice that the editors/producers picked some less well known songs as well as the more poular ones. This CD was so well put together that it made me go out and buy all the missing CDs from my collection! When I'm feeling in a mellow mood, and just want to put some music on to sit and listen to (or more ...

Graceland - Paul Simon
by Pingu - written on 27/06/00 (Useful, 84 readings)
Rating:
Beyond that, though, Paul Simon has a rare gift for improvising vocal lines which rarely do what you expect them to. This is not a case of 'take a chord progression and write the most obvious melody over the top of it.' The arrangements for the backing instruments are superb- delicate yet funky; not the incessant ...

Maiden In England (part Of Video Set) - Iron Maiden
Terminate Damnation - Becoming the Archetype
Talented progressive metalcore.
Well, it's still metalcore.
Dynamic Gallery Of Thoughts - And Oceans
Experimental black metal that isn't pompous.
Less ambitious than their later releases (I've completely contradicted myself here, I know).
Bloodlust & Perversion - Carpathian Forest
Insight into the band's early evolution and influences.
Sound quality ranges from poor to shocking.
Bright Eyes - Blind Guardian
Highlights great songs from the longer album, with some generous extras.
Hard to come by, and the 'Bright Eyes' edit gets on my pecs.
Ark +2 - Ark
Skilled performances mixed with a commercial approach.
Said mix isn't all that convincing.
