Advantages: change off style, great songs
Disadvantages: a couple of weak links
Stomping ground was the third album from the punk band goldfinger. Their first two albums, goldfinger, and hang ups had been fantastic and so more was expected from this one as well. The main change I see in this album is that it pry's away from the ska tracks of goldfinger and hang ups and focuses on just punk tracks, and some even sound quite hard core too, I believe this to be the involvement of the guitarist who wanted more hardcore songs on the album.
The album kicks off with the song I'm down. This is just such a great song, the lyrics are fantastic and they have certainly evolved lyrically so much since there first two albums, the guitar part at the beginning is great too and gets you rocking along.
Pick a fight is the second song off the album and I like it just for the palm muting at the beginning which sounds great as the singing is going on over the top of it. Again the guitar is top notch on this one and it's a really fast paced punk song all the way through.
Counting the days must be my favourite song off the album though, its not the fastest song off the album however it does really get going in parts, but its actually quite low key and the singing more then anything is just nice. I also like the many parts this song has and especially the little interlude part towards the end of the song which sounds great.
99 red balloons is actually a cover of the original song however I feel I must mention it as its just such an amazing cover. I didn't like the original at all but after hearing their version they just do it so well, ten times better than the original version.
1. I'm Down
2. Pick a Fight
3. Carry On
4. End of the Day
5. Don't Say Goodbye
6. Counting the Days
7. Bro
8. San Simeon
9. You Think It's a Joke
10. Forgiveness
11. Margaret Ann
12. Get Away
13. 99 Red Balloons
14. Donut Dan
For the album, goldfinger kind of went away from some of their more up beat ska influenced tracks on their other albums, this album was a lot louder, and allot harder than anything they had done before. Mostly it works with a few exceptions like bro, but hey, I'm not going to hold it against them 5 stars!
Summary: a great goldfinger album

- 29/05/09 99 Luftballons was an eighties classic from Nena. She sang the English version of the song (the original was in German) not knowing a word of English and not understanding what she was singing! I liked that version, so I am keen to see whether it translates well "in punk". Off to downlaod the MP3 to find out. Nicely reviewed. 8^) |
