The Ultimate Collection - The Pogues

Premium Review The Pogues - The Ultimate Collection (437 words)
by DavidJay - written on 20/08/08 (Very useful, 36 readings)
Rating:

As a swift, most-bases-covered overview of the songs of Shane McGowan - THE greatest songwriter of the past thirty years - and the work of The Pogues as a whole, The Ultimate Collection does a reasonably fair job. The hits are (mostly) all here, as are a smattering of outstanding album tracks, a couple of excellent E.P numbers and at least one "Why In God s Name Is THIS Here?" moment. Any record housing the likes of Fairytale Of New York, Rainy Night In Soho, A Pair Of Brown Eyes and The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn is obviously beyond criticism from a musical perspective. As a Collection of the recordings of The Pogues, however, it falls some way short of Ultimate ...

The Rest Of The Best - Pogues

Premium Review THE POGUES: THE BEST OF THE REST CD/DVD (3371 words)
by GentleGenius - written on 29/10/08 (Very useful, 135 readings)
Rating:

THE POGUES: THE REST OF THE BEST ALBUM Being as I reviewed The Best Of The Pogues recently (and thanks so much to all for your lovely comments, nominations - and for the crown!), I feel it only honourable to talk about their other "best of" CD, namely "The Rest Of The Best". I can t make a list of who sings and plays what, as the information doesn t appear anywhere on my CD sleeve. It s possible that more recent issues/printings of the CD/DVD sleeve may contain that information, but my own copy is around ten years old. I think Shane s voice is pretty distinctive though, so there s little or no need to mention that he s the lead singer. As with ...

Premium Review Songs to get jiggy to! (730 words)

Rating:

dad got this for christmas 2 years ago and I have to admit I slagged him off for having it something chronic! However recently I have started to really like The Pogues due to the advent of Napster; all my uni friends download constantly and they came across the Pogues through Fairytale Of New York, their most famous song. Before long everyone in the house was fake jigging around the room while singing the lyrics we had downloaded from the Net. I like to say that I liked them way back when but the truth is that I dissed them way back when!! The Pogues are James Fearnley, Terry Woods, Philip Chevron, Spider Stacy, Jem Finer, Andrew Ranken, Darryl Hunt and most famously ...
