"Street Dreams" came out in 2003 as the sophomore album from the Brooklyn rapper Fabolous. In his second offering, it would see the artist breakthrough into the mainstream with hits such as "Into You and ""Can't Let You Go", which would capitalise upon the success he had with his first real hit, "Trade It All (alongside Jagged Edge).
2. "Not Give A F**k"
To kick off the exciting vibes in this album you have him backed by some jumping beats from Rick Rock, who chooses to guide it towards the club scene with one which clearly works off the popular tunes from his debut. It is a fresh one, and nice to get you ready for more hyped stuff from him later on.
Using production snippets from the introduction section of Rapper's Delight", this is another tune which is directed towards the East Coast club scene, and I felt that it was a successful one as with the funky beats from the Trackmasters; you see that he is able to maintain what he brought prior to it and keep listeners interested.
4. "Call Me"
You have more from The Trackmasters (formally known as Poke & Tone) and for this particular one you see that they are made to relax the material to a degree as they decide that it is time t twist it towards the two-stepping scene. It is a tune with clear mainstream appeal with its light beats and the universal charm of the rhymes which he comes with. However, personally I felt it was just an average one from him.
5. "Can't Let You Go"
This is the tune which really got his name out there, but I can't see why it made such an impact as really it doesn't actually do anything original and it just sees him performing in a very basic manner to what are some rather weak beats (when you consider just what Just Blaze has produced over the years).
6. "Bad B***h"
Luckily you find that he bounce right off the tune prior to it with a track of a completely style as Precision jumps on the bats and comes with a Latino-influenced join which has him getting the lively and excited mood return to the music to show that he won't stay on the same level as what you would have got on the single prior to it here.
7. "Why Wouldn't' I"
You have more Neptunes-influenced producers coming to work with him as here you have something which has a bit of a 1999-2000 style of Chad Hugo and Pharrell William's beats coming out of Omen and in spite it is clearly bitten work, it really fits in here and gets you dancing as it is designed to.
8. "Up On Things"
The beats quickly move towards something which has another clear and distinct influence, but here it becomes a lot more apparent why this is put into place as DJ Clue and DURO come together (as they did many times on Fabolous' debut cut to do something in the style of Dr. Dre's 1999-onwards work as Fab' collaborates with Snoop Dogg on a heavy joint.
The funky beats which you get from something are something which you simply cannot resit from the music here as it sets i up as another killer tune on the album which you are made to get down to, and it sees him working with another well-established artist as Missy Elliot comes to o do her thing with him here.
10. "This Is My Party"
In track which clearly went on to influence Chingy's "Holiday In" you have a joint which has them rapper getting down to an exciting up-tempo joint which has him getting into the swing of things with a care-free recording which is just for vibing to. It let's him put his guard down as far as the rhymes go and just have fun with it.
11. "Into You"
You find that this work isn't kept up though as he moves on to another of the massively-popular tunes off the album, but this was another from it which I simply couldn't' get down to and it just didn't do something which I couldn't really appreciate with him moving right in to all the mainstream rap ways and ignore his underground work from earlier times.
12. "Change You Or Change Me"
From the tune prior to this one, you see that there has been a significant shift in the way that the music is done and so as you get into this one you have him getting into the darker Rap where the club atmosphere is clearly lost and so he gets the chance to speak on a higher level about his thought concerning the music world, but I wasn't really that down for it.
The title to this one immediately indicated the way he would chose to take things here and he didn't choose o confuse it at all by following through with what was a rather predictable turn towards the ways of Mafioso Rap . It is done in a style which fits in with the time, but it was never something I really enjoyed.
14. "Forgive Me Father"
Luckily you find that he doesn't say wit the darker material for long as he moves right back into the kind of stuff which is much more likely to appeal to a wide range of listeners. You see some freaky beats backing him as he merges the Gangsta rap with the general Rap concerning his money-spending habits.
15. "Never Duplicated"
The music goes back towards The Neptunes' style and with him making such a big impact with one particular track, which had them on the beats, it is clear why it was made to be done in such a manner and it works well. You also see him doing more of th things which have been heard at other parts of the album with flows which take directly from legends and are adapted in an effective way to his own stuff.
16. "My Life"
You see that for this one you get some hardcore production from Kanye West (prior to his time moving into the vocal Hip Hop world) and it rally boosts the music as you see him driving it with his distinctive Breakbeat usage as Fab' raps with MJB on the hook and frequent adlibs. It isa strong one, and keeps it flowing.
17. "Throw Back"
From this point onwards you see DURO and DJ Clue on the beats to take the fans back to the first album and I felt that it really helped this one in particular as he performs one which has him going all-out to express his feelings upon the then booming trend of rocking throwback jerseys (something which he was in support of).
18. "Keepin' It Gangsta" (Remix)
In a remix to a banger form his debut you get him joined by some of the biggest names of the underground East Coast seen as some of The L.O.X , M.O>P. And others come to rip through the recording in a manner which you can't fight against. It is a massive tune and keeps it on a high.
19. "Trade It All" (Part II)
Bringing it to a close here you have a remix to what I saw as the biggest joint from his debut record and here you see that the track is done largely the same way with the same summery beats, but you have a key inclusion of P. Diddy rapping on it too to just give it that extra something as the album finishes.
This is a strong album from the artist and a good way in which to follow-on from his fairly impressive first release. You see that through the majority of it he stays with the high-energy club work and this is something which is always abound to get listeners involved and so he gives only a few chances for slip-ups to occur, making for an overall banger.
