Most of the songs are dense, packed full with words, and most of them have a sorcerical, kind of Tarot feel to them that helps create an album that's completely out of its time. "Changing of the Guards," "Senor," "No Time to Think," "Where Are You Tonight" - all of these feature stories that don't quite hang together, that seem to miss something out, whilst at the same time creating an image in your mind that ma...more

Street Legal Bob Dylan Hello there strangers .I got fed up waiting for all my new products to be added, so I had a look to see what I could write about and I found “ Street Legal” I like some of Dylan’s music not all of it. I love the first one on this album .I especially love the beat as it is brilliant to keep time to on my glider as I do my exercises. One of our favourite albums the family owns is Bob Dylan’s “Street Legal”. Said to be Dylan’s most passionate and questioning albums of the seventies, ...  Read the complete review

Following 2 albums as impressive & different as 'Blood on the Tracks' & 'Desire' was always going to be a tough task, & while some rank this album among the latter day Dylan's best, I find it to be thoroughly inconsistent throughout. By no means a bad record, it just features nothing to push it anywhere close to his best work. The appearance of funk riffs & soul backup singers sounds as out of place as can be on a Dylan album, adding up to a rather unsatisfying listen. 'Changing Of The Guards' is probably the best known track on this record, & it's a steady enough track, but the over-production doesn't really suit Dylan. ...  Read the complete review

Street Legal - Bob Dylan: It Would Be A Crime To Overlook This Album (1131 words)

The previous reviewer of this album gained a crowned review for their efforts, so i feel that to make any sort of impression, i have to make this good. But then looking at the previous review, i am not sure that i agree with all of what they say, for instance, they seem to lack the admiration for the lyrics on this album, which after Blood On The Tracks was his best showing in the 70s. The instrumentation and style of the album is another world away from the likes of the previous albums and this may be a put off for some fans, and the debate stills goes on as to the merits of this album, but i am firmly in the lovers of this album camp. I see this as a masterpiece and ...  Read the complete review

Dylan the soul performer (455 words)

Rating:

'Street Legal' was probably Dylan's most commercial album since 'Nashville Skyline' nine years earlier. I mean that in the sense of it being 'easy on the ear', though both sets were worlds apart. 'Skyline' was a homely country album, and one that I've frankly never liked one bit; on 'Legal' he reinvented himself as more of a soul performer. By his standards, the band with him on these nine songs, more or less the same outfit that accompanied him on his world tour that year, is unusually rich in sound with tenor and soprano saxes, mandolin, violin, shimmering organ, and three girls on backing vocals. That's ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

Street-Legal is a vastly underrated album, mainly because of the quality of the recording - even on the remastered version it's clunky and dense. It's on this album that the first sings of the disintegration of Dylan's voice becomes apparant. But the quality of the songwriting is stellar, and once again Dylan succeeds in creating an album that is unlike anything else that came before it or was to come after - both in terms of lyrics and music. Most of the songs are dense, packed full with words, and most of them have a sorcerical, kind of Tarot feel to them that helps create an album that's completely out of its time.
