Wilco - Wilco

Rating:
Wilco, is the 8th album is from the Chicago band Wilco . Strange name for the title of the album, but wait for it - there is also a song on the tracklist called Wilco. At least that is two things you don t have to remember. Personally though I think the album is sort of forgettable in general - it is nondescript music that fails to capture the imagination. Some of the songs in themselves aren t particularly bad and the vocals are pleasant, but thats all this could be regarded as: pleasant. None of the tracks blow your mind and the band hasn t made a style of their own - it seems as though they are 15 years too late and would have better made their debut at the time ...

Mermaid Avenue Vol.1 - Billy Bragg
by DavidJay - written on 06/08/08 (Useful, 15 readings)
Rating:
When Woody Guthrie died in October 1963, the melodies for hundreds of unrecorded compositions died with him. The lyrics, however, remained, and in 1998, Billy Bragg and Wilco took those lyrics and recorded this beautiful, eclectic set (a second volume, of equally high standard, appeared in 2000). Bragg is an obvious candidate for a project of this sort, being a spiritual heir to Guthrie s throne. The addition of Wilco, however, was truly unexpected and inspired. Both acts (and Natalie Merchant, who appears on one track, performing to a melody written by Bragg) produce stunning work here, crafting an elaborate, eclectic sonic tapestry, with tracks running the gamut from ...

Mermaid Avenue Vol.1 - Billy Bragg

Rating:
those of Woody Guthrie, who died in 1967. And the songs are performed by the band Wilco, with Bragg and Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett from the band Wilco (whose "Summerteeth" album I strongly recommend) on vocals, almost alternating song by song. There are also guest vocals from Natalie Merchant. So, it's not exactly a Billy Bragg solo album, then. It is quite different, in many ways, although on some songs the style is close to that of Bragg's solo album ("Way over yonder in the minor key" and "The unwelcome guest"), with perhaps an element such as steel guitar. The tunes are all written by Bragg and Wilco, and the project was ...
