Advantages: Diverse, well produced.
Disadvantages: Maybe too inconsistent for some
As with their first album this is hard an album to review. It’s an eclectic mix, of blues, soul, dub, house, ambient and chilled styles of music. As with the first album it flows exceptionally well. Starting slow with the first three tracks and my personal fave, Bring my Family Back. Rising up to take the long way home, and slowing with Why Go? And She's my baby. Next comes the anthemic God is a DJ. Sunday 8pm leans towards a deeper and darker edge, whilst remaining true to their original ethos. They aimed to become a band in the fullest sense of the word, to excel in the live arena as well as the studio, and they have achieved just that. Faithless have opened their ears to the widest selection of sounds and have delivered their own hybrid, which persists in defying classification. Lyrically, Maxi Jazz has further honed his ability to depict, inspire and instil emotion, situation and mood - he has become a contemporary poet in an age of lyrical inanity. One of his finest moments is accomplished in the form of "Bring My Family Back"; Maxi narrates a story from the perspective of child, father and house. Take your time with Faithless songs, they are not always that which they first appear to be; and that is an essential reason to want to go back, time and time again to this music of the future. There is always something new to discover. This time around Faithless are joined by guest artists' Dido, lamenting on 'Postcards' and the inimitable Boy George who delivers his poignant rephrase on the gentle 'Why Go?' What I love about the album is the various styles that have been put together to make an album equal to Reverence. For me it’s an album that you need to listen to properly. Put it on your stereo and hear what Faithless have to say. It’s a profound and excellent album. It opens up other genres to people, if you bought it for its soulful tunes then, it will open up house music to you and vi
ce versa.

- 22/03/01 Good opinion. I have heard all of reverance but have heard none of this album. Sounds quite good though. I actually God is a old man who buzzes about in his wheel chair. I just hope he doesn't come down to Earth, because if he goes back up to heaven, it will take an eternity. After all, have you see how quick Stenna stairlifts move? |
