Advantages: Great choice of tracks, Some new favourites discovered

Disadvantages: None

Now, a few months ago I went to see Jamiroquai in concert, and in my review I told you all how it was a brilliant night with some fantastic music. Ever since then I’ve kind of missed hearing similar types of music – lets face it, mainstream radio is a bit of a letdown (unless endless boy-band stuff is your type of thing).

So whilst watching the telly one day I saw an advert for this double CD – I instantly recognised many of the artists featured (people like James Brown, Kool and the gang and Incognito) now instantly, unless you’re into this genre of music you’re probably thinking ‘who?’ – but, dear friends, an education awaits you!

This CD normally retails for about £15, but on the disc n’ tape website they were selling it for £8.49 delivered – well at that price it would be rude not to make a purchase (and it becomes VERY worrying when you can enter the switch card number from memory!) So, the CD is ordered and the very next day it arrives!

Right, I’m off to the gym and I whack the first disc in the car CD player – here is what you get on the first disc:

1. Superstition - Stevie Wonder
2. Brick House - Commodores
3. Cross The Tracks - Maceo & The Macks
4. Papa's Gat A Brand New Bag - James Brown
5. Theme From Starsky & Hutch - James Taylor Quartet
6. Always There - Incognito
7. When U Gonna Learn - Jamiroquai
8. Apparently Nothing - Young Disciples
9. Ghetto Heaven - Family Stand
10. Singles Party - Greyboy
11. EVA - Jean Jacques Perry
2. 12. I'm A Man - Spencer Davis Group
13. I Can't Get Next To You - The Temptations
14. I Want You Back - Jackson 5
15. Mr Big Stuff - Jean Knight
16. Soul Power 74 - Maceo & The Macks
17. Back by Dope Demand - King Bee
18. Jump Around - House Of Pain
19. Because I Got It Like That - Jungle Brothers
20. Rude Boy Rock - Lionrock
21.
Going Out Of My Head - Fatboy Slim

Now, bar a few tracks these are all superb – you just want to get up and dance, even in the car you’ll find yourself nodding your head and tapping the steering wheel as you motor along – the CD cover states that the tracks are ‘mixed to move you’ and they certainly are – each track more or less mixes from one to another and you can’t help but feel all cheery and happy.

From the moment you hear the bass lines start up on track one, you just can’t help but think you’ve made a wise purchase. Personal favourites on this track are ‘Superstition’, ‘Papas got a brand new bag’, ‘Mr big Stuff’.

For pure full on coolness though, you just have to drive with track 5 blaring away (theme from ‘Starsky and Hutch’) You just feel the need to dodge carboard boxes as you drive along, or stop at junctions, give a meaningful stare into the distance for a split second longer than you need to, then go on your groovy way!

So, disc one is a winner, what about the second disc?

Here’s the track listing in full:

Disc: 2
1. Sex Machine - James Brown
2. I Know You Got Soul - Bobby Byrd
3. Think - Lyn Collins
4. I Believe In Miracles - The Jackson Sisters
5. Jungle Boogie - Kool & The Gang
6. Bus Stop - Fatback Band
7. Its Ecstacy - Barry White
8. Sleeptalk - Alyson Williams
9. I Know You Got Soul - Eric B & Rakim
10. Know How - Young MC
11. Phenomenon - LL Cool J
2. 12. Freddie's Dead - Curtis Mayfield
13. Running Away - Roy Ayers
14. Stay This Way - Brand New Heavies
15. Jus Reach - Galliano
16. Step It Up - Stereo MC's
17. Remember Me - Blueboy
18. So What - Ronny Jordan
19. Cantaloop - US3
20. Beat Goes On - All Seeing I
21. Soul Bossa Nova - Quincy Jones
22. Mas Que Nada - Sergio Mendes & Brasil &#

Again, a mix of old and new – everyone will probably recognise the track by ‘Stereo MC’s, and also ‘Sex machine’ by James Brown – there’s a few unknown quantities on this disc, but just as with the first, you’re guaranteed to find a few new favourites on here too! At just over £8 it was an absolute steel – at £15 you still can’t go wrong!

Although I feel I should warn you, after prolonged listening you may end sentences with terms such as ‘Good God!’ or ‘Feel a funk y’all!’ – but this is something I would personally encourage. A very groovy album that would be great fun for parties, Even if this is a style of music you’re unfamiliar with, you just can’t help but want to strut your funky stuff – some come on readers, dig deep – make the purchase and shake your money-maker!

/Flibble wanders off, strutting his funky stuff and generally ‘getting down’
