... in a soft falsetto, which in itself was unusual as most black musicians of his ilk sang in a deep tenor. The album in its entirety is a highlight. It is very tightly edited, with the final running time clocking in at less than 40 minutes. While the total LP is a masterpiece there are of course standouts that don't merely shoot for the stars, they get there too. Pusherman is one of my favourite songs ever laid to Vinyl/CD/Tape. Superfly is the soundtrack to a film of the same name, one of the many blaxploitation movies of the time. The easiest comparison is Isaac Hayes's Oscar winning soundtrack to Shaft. But while Hayes's soundtrack was almost entirely instrumental, Superfly is full of socially aware lyrics. From the cooler than an ice cube funk of Pusherman to the gentle, yet chilling arrangement of Give Me Your Love, this album is astonishing.
