Advantages: John Williams at his best. Say no more.
Disadvantages: None
I just read the other review on here and a fine one it was. Alas there is no chance for me to review the movie itself since neither the DVD or blu-ray (of which I own both) is listed. However the music is special by itself.
Quite simply, this is the movie of my childhood. Whilst I grew up a Trekkie, Superman The Movie was the one I watched the most as a child. It is quite simply a cimematic milestone. Anyhow, I will save that for a sunstantive review one the blu-ray is listed.
John Williams really hit his stride in the 70s and 80s. Star Wars, ET, Indiana Jones...these are scores that truly stand the test of time. Who doesn't know the main these from these movies? Superman is the same. It's a testiment to the quality of the theme that it was not only reused in the sequels and Superman Returns, but it even made it into an eighties cartoon series, and cues from the score featured in Smallville during Chris Reeve's guest shot.
How does one start to review this music? Richard Donner, the director of Superman The Movie, said that he couple literally hear the sound of the worl Superman during the main fanfare. Do you know what? You really can. It's such a powerful piece of music....but then there are so many wonderful cues, from the personal Kent family theme, shown the best in "Leaving Home", to the wonderful Kryptonian music played when Jor-El (Marlon Brando) takes his son on a tour of his heritage.
For me, but perhaps because I am biased, this is Williams' best score. I feel this way because its not just the main theme that stands out. Its the whole lot. It just doesn't let down. The whole score is rich and wonderful and is entertainment byitself when you listen to it, unlike many scores.
This isn't the best version of the soundtrack to buy. The best forms part of a mega box set available in the US, however, as part of a John Williams collections its fantasic.
Summary: Not just a film score, but outstanding orchestra music.

- 04/08/09 I think I should revise my earlier review to also mention the FSM Blue Box, though unfortunately the high price and my only marginal interest in owning the three other scores (though the fourth with new Williams-composed themes would be nice if got separately) have prohibited me from acquiring this set, and not even the completely remastered first score is enough incentive for such a hefty price tag for me. Thus I'm happy with my Rhino set. Nice review. |
