Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) - The Beach Boys
by Scottyboy_Peanut - written on 18/08/09 (Very useful, 45 readings)
Rating:
Released a mere four months after The Beach Boys Today album Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) could be forgiven for being a weak album. Surprisingly, it is actually another excellent album although in many ways it is a step backwards on the journey to Pet Sounds when compared to the introspective Today album. This backward step is due to Capitol pressuring for a good time summer album in July 1965. Where Today brought us a whole LP B side of ballads this album makes no attempt to be anywhere near as reflective. This is far more pop than the previous attempt but when the tracks presented are as good as the ones here there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. ...

Rating:
Released in 1965 The Beach Boys Today captures what most consider the turning point in the career of the band. Well, not the band exactly, it was Brian Wilson s life that changed forever. This album was the first to be recorded after Brian had quit touring, the decision being made final after panic attack on an aircraft taking them to a show. The band members took some convincing that this was a wise decision but with Brian now being a full time song writer, arranger and producer the quality of their music took a hop, skip and a jump into another stratosphere and the touring band took Glen Campbell as Brian s on stage replacement. This album makes perfect use of the two ...

The Beach Boys In Concert - The Beach Boys
by Scottyboy_Peanut - written on 05/07/09 (Very useful, 50 readings)
Rating:
The Beach Boys In Concert is the only officially released recording of The Beach Boys most creative and adventurous live peak of the early 70 s. This double album is a compilation of recordings from the tours of winter 1972 and summer 1973. With their time in the limelight as makers of hit singles and best selling albums mainly confined to the past and with Brian Wilson on the sidelines and out of action being a great live act was probably their only option if they were to remain as anything other than a nostalgia act. Fortunately they not only became a great live act, but under the guidance of Carl Wilson they were the best live band in the world bar none. This was a ...
