      Very helpful

      A good fun album

This album by The Trashmen is their debut album originally released in 1964 but then re-mastered in to a CD and released in 1994. The album takes the title of their most well-known song and popular 1963 hit and features the band dressed in grey suits with slick back hair and their instruments in what seems to be a car park of some kind on the cover.

The album is full of listener friendly tunes of an early garage/surf rock nature, the musicians are incredibly enthusiastic with their instruments and the tinny guitar licks are excellent. Surfin' Bird is a strange kind of song, a popular track with the likes of The Ramones, The Cramps and other later bands from the late early to mid 70's. It is in fact two similar sounding songs by The Rivingtons "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's The Word" tied together, the bizarre vocals on this track are really something to look out for:

Whilst most tracks on this album are just pleasant surf rock tracks, one that really stands out for me is the heavier track Kuk. Henrietta and of course the always enjoyable Malaguena are no party poopers though and neither is Bird Dance Beat which tries to do a similar thing as Surfin' Bird but doesn't do it as well. Dancin' With Santa is one of those christmas time tracks that could only be heard in the 50's or late 60's and now sound very dated, here Santa and his reindeer go to a party with other contemporaries like Peggy Sue. These days it's more likely that the clubbing pair would be knifed by a hoodie!

      1. Surfin' Bird
      2. King Of The Surf
      3. Henrietta
      4. Miserlou
      5. Malaguena
      6. It's So Easy
      7. Tube City
      8. My Woodie
      9. Bird Bath
      10. Kuk
      11. Money
      12. Sleeper
      13. Surfin' Bird (Demo Version)
      14. Bird Dance Beat (Demo Version)

      16. Dancin' With Santa

An interesting album that can be picked up for around 4 quid. If you happen to come across the single Surfin' Bird at a boot sale and it is not credited to The Rivingtons, it's likely you've come across a very valuable little record as these are the very first ones and have become extremely collectable.
