Curiously, while the misleading song titles don't signify cover versions, they seemed reminiscent of those respective earlier bands, though this could have been partly my imagination. 'The Ripper' sounds a lot like classic metal in the Judas Priest style, or more accurately like the Judas Priest imitators Primal Fear, 'Take No Prisoners' features a thrashy riff (eve...more

Rating:

Not an album of rock cover songs despite the misleading first impression of its tracklist, 2004's 'Take No Prisoners' is still Chinchilla's most recent album, and also their best, relatively speaking. The album dispenses with a rubbish intro track and gets straight into the good stuff, as Urdo Gerstenmeyer lets rip with his guitar talents for the first real time, producing riffs in songs such as 'The Almighty Power' that are actually memorable. Talented progressive metal by-the-numbers. Heard it all before.

Death Metal - 1999

Epic death metal done properly. Influences show through a little too much.

Has everything; rock, guitars, romance and much much energy This band disappeared for 15 years :(

Excellent tracks None

Great concept The overall production and average songs.

Blodhemn - Enslaved
Better production, more great black metal songs. Less creative.

Frost - Enslaved
Hugely atmospheric, varied, very intense A little cheesy/disjointed in places

Ensiferum - Ensiferum
The most accessible Viking metal, with memorable songs. Tends towards similarity.

Heathenreel - Elvenking
Great example of folk power metal. Elements clash to some extent.

No World Order - Gamma Ray
Unadulterated heavy metal for genre fans. Mix Judas Priest with Helloween, and dilute.

Powerplant - Gamma Ray
Continues the classic metal sound. Almost entirely derivative of itself and other bands.

Somewhere Out In Space - Gamma Ray
Classic speed metal, finally escaping the Helloween comparison. Cheesy lyrics and dated sound, but for me this is a bonus.

Victory Songs - Ensiferum
More fun folk metal. Runs ideas into the ground.

Eld - Enslaved
Continues to evolve Viking metal in a perfect fusion with black metal. First song steals thunder from the others.

Jaktens Tid - Finntroll
Highly inventive, a perfect balance between polka and black metal elements. Can seem ludicrous at first.
