One of the most powerful moments on the original is from the title track where Steve Hogarth recalls a very vivid moment from his childhood and his experiences of travelling the world with his father who was in the merchant navy: "Oh Mummy, Daddy Will you sit a while with me Oh Mummy, Daddy Will you jog my memory And tell me Tall tales of Montego Bay Table Mountain flying fish Banana spiders, pots of paint And the sun on the equator Setting like an ember throw...more

Premium Review Tales From The Engine Room - Marillion: Strange tales of unique experiences repackaged! (622 words)

Some musical experiments were born to work and this is definitely one of them. Marillion, themselves, may have once swore that they would never allow their music to be remixed and repackaged in this way but you can bet your bottom dollar they were pleased with the result. If anything it has added a new dimension to their later work which can be heard with particular resonance from "Radiation" onwards. The original "This Strange Engine" was a very moving, emotional and evocative album and Positive Light had quite a tricky job on their hands not to dilute the impact of that album. The danger was, I guess, that if the fusion didn't work it ...  Read the complete review

Marillion and Techno - isn't that like oil and water? "We vowed we'd never let anyone do this." (Steve Hogarth, "H") As I rummaged around the other day in a big music store I discovered a CD by Marillion I didn't know yet although the title seemed familiar to me somehow. OK, so I'm a big-time Marillion fan. But mainly thanks to the company of Pete Tong on Friday night commutes home down the M4, I also have a keen interest in the club music scene. I never believed that I would find something that combined the two. This album does. And how! It was originally lent to me by an even bigger big-time Marillion fan - a guy who collects everything, including the solo projects, singles and of course, the t-shirts. I was so impressed that I wouldn't give it back until my own copy had arrived - it is, unfortunately, only available from Racket Records (Marillion's own label). Steve Hogarth, the band's lead ...  Read the complete review
