... Factory Girl, a slow ballad sung beautifully by Sinead O'Connor. The Magdelene Laundries, composed and sung by Joni Mitchell, also on guitar. A tale of a "bad" girl sent to a convent run laundry for her sins, it takes a swipe at religious hypocrysy. It is a powerful and thought provoking track, and sung in Joni Mitchell's unique style. Raglan Road, a love song, from the male perspective, but sung by Joan Osborne, gorgeous voice. A Stor Mo Chroi, sung by Bonnie Rait, a traditional piece, about a lo...more

CD title "TEARS OF STONE". This CD is amongst my best buys! Combine the Cheiftains music with some superb female vocalists and you have a gem of an album to listen to. The fact that the special guests are all women gives you a clue to the main theme of the album, yes, it is love, and I unashamedly admit I am a bit of a softie! I won't list every track, but I will mention a few of my favourites The first track is a talk track, with background music composed by Paddy Molony. It is the voice of Brenda Fricker (better known from the TV series casualty) speaking the words of W.B. Yeats, and is entitled "Never give all the heart". ...  Read the complete review

On 'Tears of Stone' the Chieftains joined up with a variety of wonderful female singers to give traditional Irish songs a modern feel. Each song on this CD features a different female singer (the list includes:- Joan Osborne; The Corrs; Natalie Merchant, Sinead O' Connor and Mary Chaplin Carpenter). My favourite tracks from Tears of Stone are Joan Osborne's goosebump-inducing rendition of Raglan Road. I am not a huge Corrs fan, but I loved them singing I Know My Love (a very bouncy and upbeat song). Siuil A Run is one of those songs that never fails to move and The Fiddling Ladies will certainly get your feet tapping. One song is sung in Japanese (I ...  Read the complete review

Too much pop

Above The Weeping World - Insomnium
Classic Gothenburg sound revisited, with a faithful and creative performance. Second half of the album runs out of ideas.

Angl - Ihsahn
Classical influences, picks up from where the last album left off. Small sounds that don't seem like to belong in place, but that's what makes the sound complete.

Screaming For Vengeance - Judas Priest
Commits itself to a heavier and more intense sound, and succeeds admirably. Weaker attempts at pop-metal remain.

Silver Spoons And Broken Bones - Stone Gods
Some stomping 1980s style pop-rock tunes Some really awful lyrics.

The Black Halo - Kamelot
Consistent, good atmosphere. Dull and samey.

The Fourth Legacy - Kamelot
More confident and focused release, boasting great variety. Inconsistent, and ballads are quite dull.

Tribute To The Gods - Iced Earth
Many rock and metal favourites. Disappointingly obvious selections, and no attempt to make the sound their own.

Turbo - Judas Priest
Great vocals, impressive guitar work and some effective use of synthesisers. Too many bland and occasionally annoying pop-rock songs.

Unleashed In The East - Judas Priest
Impressive performance of many early Judas Priest classics. Original release is lacking in quantity, and some favourites are always going to be missing.
