The Idiot - Iggy Pop
by mh42 - written on 21/01/09 (Very useful, 23 readings)
Rating:
When Iggy Pop began touring for his first solo album title The Idiot many critics criticized him for being a mere puppet for the artistic whims of a certain Davy Jones. Whether or not this is the case or not this is a seminal album and proved to be the inspiration for countless bands over the next 25 years. A complete departure from his earlier work with the stooges (and indeed his last collaboration with Bowie Raw Power ) The Idiot incorporates a cold metallic European sound which is obviously indebted to bands like Krafftwerk and the Walker Brothers (with their album Nite Flights ). Each track follows a theme of regret and self loathing (see "Dum Dum ...

The Idiot by Iggy Pop is an album which seemed to bring in the plaudits, I m not convinced by the quality of the album though. On the upside, it saw Iggy Pop return to the scene from several years of hard living and rehab. It seems to lack the balls of The Stooges and doesn t have the trademark sound that he developed in later years, my favourite being the heavy sounding older Iggy of albums like Skull Ring and Beat Em Up. This album was produced by David Bowie and it has a really strong David Bowie influence to it, I m not a big fan of the artist and therefore don t really dig the effect he had on Iggy on this album. Saying that, there are still some excellent tunes - ...

A Million In Prizes: The Anthology - Iggy Pop

This Iggy retrospective double album has been meandering on my PC for as long as I remember - high time it received an airing! Sadly it doesn t have the plethora of bonus and unreleased bits and pieces that I had mistakenly thought it had, but it s a nice set for me to keep hold of regardless. Iggy s done some good stuff, but for me he just misses the mark - the slight punk edge isn t my bag which is a shame, although his era with Ziggy was never going to go unnoticed! Indeed, some of his greatest hits included on the album, namely Sister Midnight and the amazing China Girl have been covered by Bowie (the former as a live rendition on the Reality tour). As well as ...
