... possible. 'Helicon 1' is a riveting 6 minutes of deep valley grooves and high mountain peaks. It starts out like laser guided melodies and as it gets more spiritualistic the overflow finally prompts a wall of sound that has a spectacular mural scratched into its being. 'A Place For Parks' is a bit more inhibited but surfaces with a killer hook that hides the idle chat in the background. 'Summer' adopts one of those Mogwai tricks where the tune flips between brilliantly effervescent and ho...more

Premium Review Ten Rapid - Mogwai: Electric Mainliners (475 words)
by - written on 13/04/01 (Very useful, 46 readings)
Rating:

This is a collection of some early ep's released by Mogwai and is definitely worth every penny you pay for it. Rather than waiting around for something to happen, Stuart Braithwaite and Co. head straight for the jugular on each the nine tracks. I had this album 6 months before I listened to it, due in part to the letdown that was their CODY album. Ten Rapid has restored my faith in them completely. Mogwai's great gift has always been their ability to layer on the bombast without ever sounding bombastic. When a plethora of guitars play off each other like a knowing group of friends, the sound is too gorgeous to describe. Like an ocean that is too calm to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Ten Rapid (216 words)
by - written on 06/09/00 (Useful, 28 readings)
Rating:

This is a compilation of Mogwai’s earliest releases, rather than an album full stop, if my source (i.e. my memory) is to be believed. As you'd expect from an earlier effort, it's not quite as polished as the outstanding Young Team. Banish that disappointment by buying Ten Rapid, as it shares far in style terms with Young Team (and indeed, with the recent eponymous EP) ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Ten Rapid - Mogwai: Lost gems (246 words)
by - written on 06/07/00 (Very useful, 23 readings)
Rating:

Before Mogwai released 'Young Team', the band released a few singles which were received quite well, but not quite as well as hardly anyone knew them, believe it or not; but some of those gems deserved to be heard again after dissapearing from shelves of seedy little record stores, due to copies being limited in nature. Thankfully, the band re-released the best of those tracks as a compilation called 'Ten Rapid' to mainly introduce them to the new US audience, aswell as give existing fans a chance to catch up on the old stuff. It's quite a short compilation; but, parting your money for it, is well worth it. The stunning version of ...  Read the complete review
