First off a disclaimer: I am embarking on writing a series of Hip-Hop reviews, but I am not an expert on the genre. I enjoy it as a fan, but don't know everything about it like some of the excellent reviewers on here such as XICripZ. My reviews will be in the style of 'Hip-Hop for Dummies', and won't go into any background I know nothing about. I will simply describe the music, the sound and the lyrics, giving a short and succinct over-view of the album to newcomers like me!

I came to Lil Wayne at the recommendation of Mcicp, and whilst at first I wasn't that intrigued, this album has grown on me.

Lil Wayne's sixth album came out in 2008, and is unlike anything else I've heard.

Musically, the album is solid, with good, simplistic tracks. There's nothing outrageous about the music, with the emphasis on the rap instead.

Performance-wise, Lil Wayne's voice is very distinct. It has a very laid-back, chilled almost whiney tone to it, which makes it noticeable right away. It actually annoyed me at first, sounding like a made up voice, but I like it now, and find it something distinct and different in a world of the same old thing.

Lyrics-wise, the raps are very clever, falling often on the off-beat. It's not rhyming couplets the whole way through, but the whole thing does rhyme. The timing is also a mixture, and so the result is a flowing album that is still very different in style to the other stuff out there.

The content varies, but there is a fair bit about how great Lil Wayne is, and his input into the rap genre. I find all Hip Hop stars are self-obsessed to some level, but this is one of the greater examples of that, as tracks about Lil Wayne's skills and wealth fill a lot of the album.

All in all, this is a nice, original album that offers something very different in a genre that is pretty repetitive these days.
