In 1997, two years after his former band mate had, the Hip Hop lyrical mastermind Rakim made his solo debut (his first since Eric B & Rakim fell apart of money after their fourth album in 1992). "The 18th Letter" finds the Long Islander backed by some of the biggest underground East Coast beatmakers in the game with the likes of DJ Clark Kent, Pete Rock and DJ Premier all having some input here as he shows what can be done this far along without the sort of stuff that Eric B offered (in spite of the fact that Rakim actually says that much of their early work had him behind the production anyway). 1.
