... were. Matt Smith's vocals (great metal name there, as fear-inducing as Matthew Barlowe) vary between a death grunt and rasp without going in for any of that piercing metalcore singing stuff, and he's perfectly suited to the hard guitar riffs and pummelling drums, which are actually impressive when not just relying on a machine gun imitation for heaviness. The guitar riffs are loose and seemingly improvised to some extent, progressing up and down according to the guitarist's whims, and of course there are blaring solos...more

'The Arcanum Order' is a consistent debut from American band At the Throne of Judgement, by which I mean that all of the songs sound pretty much exactly the same (and the band name and album title seem to be the wrong way round, don't you think?) On the positive side, this is decent enough Soilwork-style melodic death metal that isn't really death metal, but is a bit too good and not overtly hostile enough to be considered metalcore, which will still be hard enough for those who don't mind a bit of crossover. Personally, this kind of consistent hammering aggression isn't my cup of tea, and I probably wouldn't use phrases like "cup of tea" if it ...

One of the greatest metal albums of all time, lots of classics, a cohesive album, good lyrics, music and production A bit hard to swallow at first for some people, some of the guitar solos sound cheesey - but were probably still cool then, and are still exciting

Heavy Metal - 1995

Entertaining classic metal with doom-style guitars. The lyrics.

Perfect if you want something loud on, Sounds rather 'Black Sabbath' in places . Not everybody's type of music

Effective, uncompromising drone doom. Tedious and static-laden, if you're not into that sort of thing.

Competent technical death metal that doesn't show off. Lacks individuality.

We've Come For You All - Anthrax
Lively songs with a great vocal performance and some degree of variation. Suffers from the same groove metal disease as much modern thrash.

'Red Robin' is quite good. The rest is dull and tedious.

More experimental and fun than other mid-to-late-nineties Anthrax. Still nothing like the good ol' days.

Great drums and maintenance of the longboat sound. Songs blur together and lack the energy of earlier releases.

Village Lanterne - Blackmore's Night
Reasonable mix of folk rock and traditional songs. Why cover 'Streets of London?'
