I was given this CD for my birthday because my friend knew how much I loved James Morrison's single 'I won't let you go'. I wasn't really that familiar with any other James Morrison's songs but I was eager to play it because if I won't let you go was anything to go buy it was going to be fantastic!
~ Little bit of background about James ~
James was born in August 1984 in Rugby, Warwickshire. His singing genres are pop, soul and rock. He has been a professional song artist since 2006. He has released three albums, undiscovered (2006), Songs for you truths for me (2008) and the awakening (2011). He also plays the guitar.
~ Price & Availability ~
James Morrison's the awakening is available in most music stores and supermarkets with a music section as well as online. Tesco's are currently selling it at £11.57, Asda is selling it at £10.97 and HMV have it on at £7.00.
~ Appearance & Cover ~
James Morrison's the awakening album has a photo of the man himself on the front with 'James Morrison' written in orange font below. Underneath this is 'the awakening' written in smaller white font. The covers not really that exciting, it's quite dark and isn't very standout-ish or eye-catching. The back of the album lists the songs on the CD which are; in my dreams, 6 weeks, I won't let you go, Up (featuring Jessie J), slave to the music, person I should have been, say something now, beautiful life, right by your side, one life and all around the world.
~ The CD ~
I'd say this particular CD of James' is very much soul music. It's very calming. Most of the songs are just a bit of percussion and James' guitar which is nice as there's no gimmicky sound effects, just James doing what he does best; singing and playing his guitar. The songs on this CD are all very much the same and can get slightly repetitive and sometimes it feels as if you are listening to the same song numerous times, it would have been nice for a bit of a mix up of music genres. I think James shows his talent off exceptionally well in this album and it makes you realise how gifted he is, he doesn't need any loud, bolshy backing tracks. I often play this CD whilst doing the housework or when I need time to zone out for a while. The songs on this album are very catchy, I have found myself remembering the words just after listening to it a couple of times, I think this may be because a lot of the words are extremely meaningful and easy to relate to.
~ Overall opinion ~
I would recommend this CD to anybody who wants to enjoy some pure soul music without having to listen to any silly sound effects or overpowering instruments. However I wouldn't recommend this CD to you if you are wanting something to make you get up and dance, because this doesn't. The songs aren't very upbeat, in fact a majority are quite slow and steady - good wind down music. I'm so glad my friend bought me this CD as I enjoy it so much and James' voice isn't like anybody else's, nor are his songs.
Credit where it due James, this is fab!
