Thom Yorke Is The Man (The Bends - Radiohead)
Advantages: 12 brilliant songs Disadvantages: none
Radiohead's second album eliminated the flecks of gauchness that smudged the first. With a remarkable range of guitar noise, its bitter outlook is shaped by their exclusion from the Britpop party while they were 'breaking' the States ('You kill yourself for recognition' grumbles High & Dry), while its spiralling arrangements impart more defiance than misery.Thom Yorke's arseyness is born out of 2 things: firstly, growing up a black sheep in a small, self-consciously intellectual community, and secondly, becoming famous for growing up a black sheep, etc. Thank God for the tunes, eh? Only Jeff Buckley rivalled them in terms of grace, and he's dead. Summary: |
