Advantages: good choices

Disadvantages: status quo

I am not known for reaching for my air guitar, possibly because I don't have one. Not even an air one! But I do like this kind of music, it provides a welcome break from the monotony of today's stagnant chart climate.

Spread over two discs, the CD comprises 41 tracks which are designed to make you leap up and think you're in a rock band. It gets off with Queen's 'We Will Rock You,' Mercury's voice growls like a panther and the guitar work here is electric. The chorus anthemic and manly and it is basically is a song for men to be men.

'Song 2' by Blur is less than two minutes of fiendishly good shouting and throwing yourself about. Damon Albarn is having a blast and the song packs so much energy into it, it seems fit to burst at any second. If this all proves too much for you, then turn things into a strut with Aerosmith and Run DMC, where rap and rock merge and work well.

I love Def Leopard, thanks to some gripping vocals from Elliot and soaring guitar work. Next be sure to check out Bowie doing 'Rebel Rebel' where he is so cool it hurts.

If you fancy something more refined, then Dire Straits are here with 'Sultans of Swing' which is just soaked in nostalgia and sounds like it has been carved from a timeless tree of sound, quite wonderful. If this floats your boat, then 'Freebird' by Lynyrd Skynard will also be a treat with the soothing guitar work.

As you hit disc two, check out Weezer's melanchonic 'Hash Pipe' with heavy riffing and suspect lyrics. The Shadows take this on an uber cool streak with the instrumental 'Apache' which still sounds amazing.

There is some free-love in the air with Free doing 'Alright Now,' which is anthemic in many ways and stooped in tv advert history. Motorhead is way too heavy for me, but is obviously for biker types.

Status Quo I can pass on, somehow, they have always sounded old, even their earlier stuff! The album culminates with the overrated 'Bohemian Rhapsody' which is a good bit of music, but overlong and too self important.

A solid package of hits though that will please guitar music fans.

Summary: good manly stuff for men
