      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A great mix of tracks spanning Bette's career

For my birthday I was lucky enough to get this CD as it is one which I had wanted for a long time but never got around to buying it, I know t might be a strange request for me as I am only just over 25 (yeah who am I trying to kind!) and Bette Midler is more for the older listener but the adverts for the CD made t sound very appealing and showed her singing all of the songs which I really like. I have to say when I received it and read through the track list I was slightly disappointed as there only seemed about 4 songs which I knew.

Once I finally got around to listening to it I realised that I did in fact know a lot more of the songs just not their names which was a blessing for me as I thought it was going to be a boring album. There are 22 songs on this album and they are:-

      1 - In the Mood
      2 - This Ole House
      3 - Beast of Burden
4 - Just my Imagination (Running Away With me)
      5 - The Rose
      6 - When a Man loves a Woman
      7 - I've Still Got My Health
8 - Spring Can Really Hang Up the Most
      9 - Hello in There
10 - The Glory of Love
      11 - Tenderly
12 - Wind Beneath My Wings
13 - Do You Want To Dance?
      14 - Baby Mine
      15 - From A Distance
16 - Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
      17 - Friends
18 - Something Your Heart is Telling Me
      19 - Cool Yule
      20 - Miss Otis Regrets
      21 - To Deserve You
      22 - In My Life

As you will see from the track list the two stand out tracks have to be Wind Beneath my Wings and From a Distance, these are the ones which I instantly recognised and was thankful that they were actually on the CD, I have to say that these are from my childhood and really do enjoy listening to them both, they are both ballads and have powers vocals and words throughout and I find they have so much meaning and I do love belting along to them when cooking in the kitchen.

The opening song is a funny one as I know the music so well but for me the words which are sung seem so different to the ones I know, despite this I found it was a lovely way and lively one to start the CD. The song dates back from 1973 and for me this was quite surprising as I did not realise Bette had been singing for so long. This bubbly and toe tapping song is quite different from others on the CD as the next track which we have is very Country style but I think this makes the album so much better to listen to as it is very mixed and you never know what style song is coming next.

The vocals on all of the tracks are amazing and some of them show just what a powerful voice Bette does have, others show a different style to her voice with the fast swinging tracks as this is a completely different style I am used to hearing from her. She sings them all very well and manages to make them all very appealing. I do have to say the old swing songs somehow always make me think of massive American dance halls with everyone filling the floor enjoying themselves along with a massive live band.

For me there is only one weak track on this album and that has to be Something Your Heart Has Been Telling Me as for some reason I don't enjoy listening to it and find it is quite depressing. The track has a Spanish feel and can imagine her on stage in a massive Spanish dress waving the shirt around as she is singing it, the vocals and very good but for me it is just too depressing.

There is one track on this CD which I did not expect at all and this is number 5, The Rose. The song come to my attention when Westlife made it a massive hit a few years back, since them I have heard other covers of the song but I did not realise it was so old and Bette actually sang and recorded this back in 1979. I really do like her version of it and think the females vocals work very well and for me I ranks highly as one of my favourites now. We also have a few other cover songs on the album including Just My Imagination and When a Man Loves a Woman and I think these are great additions as Bette manages to put her own stamp on them, she does not completely alter the arrangements and tempos on the tracks but she manages to alter them just enough to make them her own.

The cover of the CD is good and it shows Bette sitting on a suitcase in very skimpy shorts and blue shirt in front of a desert backdrop, she looks amazing in the picture and I cannot believe she is really as old as she is. The back of the CD show Bette is a Vegas headdress and just on overcoat and again she looks amazing, I dread to think how much airbrushing was used on her legs but if it was none then I am so jealous! On the back cover you can also find the track list. The inside of the cover contains all the details from the tacks and the running times and years or recording.

AS this was a gift I am not sure how much hubby paid for it but I have looked on the net and it is priced between £6 and £10 depending on where you look. I do really recommend this CD as it contains 22 different tracks which do make for quite diverse and good listening. The vocals are all excellent and so to is the consistency of tracks. I think have had my eyes opening to the extent of music Bette has made and sang. A great 4 star album.
