Meltdown - Ash

The return of Ash was always going to be sticky ground as far as I was concerned. I’d liked Nu-Clear Sounds and 1977 but Free All Angels didn’t really do anything for me. It lacked any real sense of purpose with far too many mellow tracks. It’s not that I’m against mellower tracks; I just didn’t expect an album full from Ash. I decided not to write them off totally though as I’d heard a couple of tracks from the album and liked the sound of them. The Northern Ireland based band have been together since the early 90’s, starting out when they were just 14. It ...

This was Ash's first album as a four-piece with the addition of guitarist Charlotte Hatherly, and with this sees a more marked change from the poppiness of "1977" as A Ash head down a more dark, broody, heavier path. Critics seemed to adore the album, although the fans reception was more lukewarm, it lost them quite a few fans whilst not really gaining them any. I think the more mature sound really benefits the band, as they grow up and move on. Projects Is a fantastic opening track, as well as concert opener. Beginning with a hum that grows louder and louder and then some really great guitars before the explosion of sound of drums and bass coming in. ...

and one classically trained pianist turned guitarist girl from London, Charlotte Hatherley. The foursome is making their sophomore contribution with Nu-Clear Sounds. So, have we been missing anything lately? Is A Ash the band that's going to reinvigorate people's verve for the Queen's rock? Or will it will it all remain a blur? Hmmmm... Ash does have an interesting sound, especially if you like the Pixies, as they've said they do. Tracks like the fanciful ""Wild Surf"" and the eerily Pix-similar ""Numbskull"" sound like Pixie tribute tunes with their off-key guitar riffs (hey — they were a tremendous band ...
