Advantages: Most of the songs

Disadvantages: To the end, On your own.

I had not heard any of Blur's other albums prior to getting this for Christmas last year and I must confess when Brit-pop was at its height I preferred Oasis to Blur. In some ways this is still true now but I have come to appreciate that Blur are also a brilliant band. I had only heard the songs they had released as singles before, and that has not changed much since I got this album since most of the songs were released anyway. However, I have come to love every song on the album, although some of the ones towards the end are a touch bland, notably To the end and On your own.

This album is full of great songs which everyone will know, whether a Blur fan or not. The first track is the cheery Beetlebum and the number 2 spot is occupied (not surprisingly) by the ball-breakingly-brilliant song 2. (How did they ever decide which number to put that in at?)
The rest of the first half of the album is made up of other classics such as The Universal, Coffee and TV (perhaps not a classic) and of course the excellent Parklife. I have read some reviews on this album and realised that quite a lot of people do not like the 9th song Tender. I think it is a great song excellently sung by Damon Albarn and is probably one of my favourites on the album.

Other great songs on it of course are Girls and Boys, Charmless man and Country House; however, these are followed by two quite ordinary (by the standards of the rest of the album) songs To the end and On your own. These two are not just as good as the others are and even though I suppose some people may like them, I don’t. The last song on the album is the only new song on it, Music is my radar. It is a great, futuristic-sounding song and it is another of my favourites on the cd.

All in all this album is a great buy, especially for those people who like me haven’t heard much of Blur’s work. It’s full of cracker songs and I recommend it to everyone.
