Born in 1961 as plain George O'Dowd, he created the glamorous persona of Boy George, formed a band with Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and his soon-to-be lover Jon Moss and a legend was created!
After calling themselves "In Praise of Lemmings", then "Sex Gang Children", they looked at their cultural differences and settled on 'Culture Club'.
After enlisting the formidable backing vocals of helen Terry they hit No.1 worldwide with "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" which paved the way for a succession of global hits.
Four studio albums followed in the 80's and another in 1998. As is always the casde with successful groups there has also been a succession of Greatet hits packages of which these was one of the earliest.
Although not as recent and attractive as other compilations (such as 'as worst...The Best Of...'), this CD contains many fine reminders of why George and the boys captivated the world.
"Do you really..." is a magnificent soulful ballad, "Church of the Poison Mind" is Motown-esque in it's energy and although slightly cheesy "Karma Chameleon" sold well over 1 million copies in the UK and repeated similar figures all over the world. For sheer bliss listen to the string arrangements and soaring vocal on "Victims" or shake your hips to "Miss Me Blind"."Time" is a bitersweet love song, where George's voice takes on a pleading quality and "It's a Miracle" is a perfect excuse to shake down and boogie!!
"I'll tumble 4 Ya" -the lyrics may be confusing (George himself say's he hasn't a clue what he was writing about!) but it's still an uplifting pop masterpiece.


A song for every occasion, slap it in the c.d. player, dig out those fedora hats and eyeliner and wallow in some of the greatest music the 80's produced!
