Advantages: Great song selection, good price, short

Disadvantages: Maybe too few songs for some who want a more comprehensive overview

The Stranglers were a UK new wave/punk rock group whose main success happened during the late 70's and early 80's. They were revered by some but also distanced from and sometimes criticised by other punk groups for their innovative use of synthesisers, not regarded the instrument of choice for punk rockers. This collection is a mid-price collection and focuses on arguably the groups' most successful period between 1977 - 1982.

For anyone looking for an entry point into the music of The Stranglers this is a perfect place to start, and was indeed the entry point for me. I was first made aware of their music from the film Sexy Beast and the glorious use of The Stranglers 'Peaches' at the beginning of that film (remember the boulder into the swimming pool). That track, and many other hits are included here. This collection is a good bite-size introduction and does not contain an overwhelming amount of music. At 14 tracks in length it goes to show that quantity does not always equal quality (something that some dooyoo users may take on board) because there are no fillers here.

Given the period restraint of the collection it focuses on the best recordings and omits the weaker efforts that came after which is a blessing. The aforementioned 'Peaches' is probably the standout track here for it's rambunctious swagger and catchy hook but don't be fooled into thinking this is a one hit collection. We also get the lengthy and at times bizarre take on the Bacharach and David classic 'Walk On By', the aptly titled 'Nice 'n' Sleazy' which is by name, sleazy, Hangin' Around which equals 'Peaches' in the catchy and hooky stakes and the sublime 'Golden Brown' showing the songwriting credentials of the band and proving they don't have to rock to be great.

Finally, this CD comes at a cut price meaning that a used copy on Amazon can set you back as little as 99p + postage. Go on, that's surely worth a punt isn't it? Highly recommended.

Summary: A Great Introduction To The Band
