By 1968 Elvis Presley was pretty much considered a has-been. He had invented rock 'n' roll in the mid-1950s but in the 1960s had become a bit of a joke, appearing in very light-hearted movies which often featured what was considered to be poor music (although personally I can find something to like in almost all Elvis films and songs). In 1968 Elvis' management had the bright idea of producing a Christmas TV special.
