... have followed and imitated their style - Black Grape, Oasis, Happy Mondays, those kind of bands. Think cool guitar sounds with Ian Brown's disinterested vocals, and you'll be there or thereabouts. It's a mix of funk, rock n roll and indie unsurpassed by nobody since. If you own The Stone Roses album, there is little point in purchasing this as all it really is is that album plus a few tracks from their other far weaker albums. Those were a major disappointment and it remains a mystery among their fans how...more

Premium Review The Complete Stone Roses - Stone Roses: Down, down, you're gettin me down... (645 words)

Starting this review is pretty damn hard. What can you say about the Stone Roses that hasn't been said a million times before? Maybe I should just give up now. No, I'll give it a go. The Complete Stone Roses is, as the title suggests, the complete Stone Roses collection. It includes all their best songs, along with all the lesser-known album fillers. When it was released in 1995, it got to number four in the charts. Sound average? Not when you consider that the original and best, their debut album The Stone Roses, only made number nineteen in 1989. For an album with such widespread recognition as the first of the 90s indie collection, this is a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Complete in itself (119 words)

Rating:

The Complete Stone Roses is a compilation album of some of the greatest moments in the Stone Roses career. It includes brilliant songs such as Fools Gold and Elephant Stone and also great b-sides such as Standing Here and Where Angels Play. The fact that many of these songs are b-sides gives a pointer to how good the roses actually were. All the songs jump out at first and after repeated listen the deep, old testament infused lyrics starts to bury under the skin. However, the album would have been a lot better if some tracks form the Second Coming had been included. Obviously this was for contractual reasons but it would have been nice. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Complete Stone Roses - Stone Roses: Completely........ (260 words)

This CD is essential for any Stone Roses fan. It charts the progress of the band from the early beginnings right through untill just before the Second Coming. Starting off with a couple of early efforts which are very ropey to say the least. I useually skip these. This is where we get the good stuff. There are a few songs off the Stone Roses "The Stone Roses" album, but thi sis mainly B sides and single only releases. "Elephant Stone" sounds like a "Fools Gold" prototype, a good songs that thunders along. Much of the material here is of a very high quality indeed, and could well have been included on the album itself. Songs ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Stone Roses at their zenith (220 words)

Rating:

The Stone Roses were the band at the start of the 1990s. Not that I knew it then, I was introduced to them far later (like a lot of people) and the fact they have so many fans even now is a testament to their greatness. This compilation was released by their first record company, Silvertone, upon the band leaving and going to Geffen. It is a blatant attempt to cash in and the only time you see a picture of Ian Brown and the rest of the band is on the front cover of the album. Still, it summarises nicely the glory days of the band, before the band lost its way in later years. Brown?s vocals are excellent, John Squire?s guitar playing the stuff of ...  Read the complete review

it's Radiohead! Too experimental?

Amazing variety of different styles. A couple of average songs.

Interesting formative versions of classic songs Many of the songs sound very similar, bad production
