While this is technically no more arbitrary than the TV show guitar melodies that littered earlier works such as 'Burning Bridges,' it results in a less confident and professional album from a band that really should have risen to the top of their game by now, rather than slipping from t...more

'Doomsday Machine' continues Arch Enemy's inevitable move towards a mainstream metal style that really began with Angela Gossow's introduction to the band, but commendably stick to their guns as far as heaviness is concerned. While the sound here is certainly more in line with metalcore than the band's death metal origins, there's none of that genre's irritating vocal whining or pointless antagonism, and while the performers here are all still highly competent (even if Gossow does disappointingly rely on digitised enhancement for her growl), the main problem seems to be the Amott brothers' unreliable and inconsistent new approach towards mixing melody with ...  Read the complete review

Excellent guitar and drum performance, high in energy throughout. Chaotic structure is problematic and detracts from the enjoyment.

Tight performance without excess. Too unpredictable for some.

Another fantastic metal opera by Tobias Sammett lots of guest vocals None for me

Superb vocals, and lyrics, great song structure and hugely atmospheric Quite short, though bolstered by some great live tracks.

Excellent, stripped-down riffs and song-structures, superb vocals and lyrics, great atmosphere None

Back to the Known - Bad Religion
Glorious return to the older style that still moves forward, with a few early classics. Only ten minutes long, and some songs are less fun.

United In Regret - Arsis
Excellent melodic death metal with technical guitars. A little less distinctive.

Temple Of The Cat - Ayreon
A fair overview of 'The Dream Sequencer,' if nothing else. Not Ayreon's strongest material.

Reek Of Putrefaction - Carcass
The ultimate grindcore experience. Difficult to listen to.

The Endless Agony - Anachronia
Exceptional guitars and vocals, and the other guys aren't bad either. A few later tracks fail to stand out quite as much.

Calculated Use Of Sound - Protest the Hero

Bleed - Angel Dust
Powerful vocals, high production values and an enjoyable mood. Rooted in the past with few distinguishing features.

Bach/Beethoven/Mozart - Works For Violin And Piano

Someone To Love You - Ruff Endz
R&B & Soul - Soul - 2002

Back On Top - Van Morrison
Pure class songs, pure class arrangements, pure class musicians, pure class everything! None that are in any way significant
