The Eminem Show - Eminem
Advantages: Some Great Tracks
Disadvantages: Not As Good as The Marshall Mathers LP
Having recently reviewed the Marshall Mathers LP I feel I can swiftly move onto another very good album by Marshall Mathers, more widely known by his nicknames Eminem or Slim Shady.
This was Eminem's third commercial release and also his third straight album to win the best rap album Grammy and personally I feel this is fully justified, however the big question was whether he could match or even surpass the hugely popular and controversial Marshall Mathers LP. I will come back to this topic a little later.
This album has been certified 8x Platinum by the RIAA and has sold over a highly respectably 19million albums worldwide. This is no mean feat and this shows that he is still a very popular artist and this album ranks at number 317 on the Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the top 500 albums of all time. It is not easy to get onto that list with many thousands of albums being released every year for as long as music has been produced so achieving a place in the top 500 is a great achievement.
Like with his previous albums there are a few playful, more commercial tracks on this album. The first track released was 'Without Me', and this is one of his better commercial tracks. However the commercial tracks are not what attracts me towards Eminem's music, it is his more serious and personal side where he can use deep lyrics and integrate this with a catchy beat. I am glad to say this album is no exception and if anything it is even deeper than the Marshall Mathers LP.
In answer the pre-mentioned question of whether this is better than his last album I would have to say No. This is however a very good album and there is a great mix of different type of tracks. I just feel that his last album was far more consistent and there were specific tracks like The Way I Am and Stan that just will be very hard for him to match. There are not really many too offensive tracks on this album like Kim and personally I can not say whether this is a good or bad thing as long as he keeps releasing quality music. I would not recommend buying this for young children however as strong language is still used and therefore this would not be suitable. This album is aimed towards at least teenagers and older.
Eminem here does far more producing than ever before with the majority of tracks being produced single handed by himself. His long time friend and producer Dr. Dre also produces a few of the tracks and was also the executive producer on the album.
My Fav Tracks
Cleaning'Out My Closet - This is a very personal track and one of my favourites on the album. The beat is slow but powerful and the main aspect is his lyrics here which definitely hit home with the listeners. It is all about starting a fresh and forgetting the sins of the past committed by himself and others. I highly recommend checking this track out first for any of those looking to purchase this album. What I will say though is that the Jack Knife Lee remix I actually find more enjoyable and it has a great rock remix in the background which definitely adds to the swinging emotion throughout this track.
Hailie's Song - As you can imagine from the title this track was written for his daughter Hailie. It is a very sweet track about how we will always be there for her and this is one of the only tracks where Eminem attempts singing and includes this phrase in the intro of the track. He does a pretty good job, but gets back to his best in the final verse when he resorts to his rapping and provides his lyrical genius on his track for his daughter. I wouldn't advise her listening to it till she gets quite a bit older though as it is not the cleanest track he has done.
Superman - Another one of his more playful track and one of my favourite tracks that he has experimented around with. This featured Dina Rae and is about the girls he has had in his life and is rumoured to be about a supposed relationship between him and Mariah Carey. I recommend checking out the video for it which can be found on the 8 mile DVD and on YouTube. It definitely can not be seen by a young audience and is therefore never on the commercial music channels.
Sing For The Moment - Along with Cleanin' Out My Closet this is arguably my favourite track on the album and has a very catchy chorus. Saying this though Eminem himself does not sing the chorus with Steven Tyler from Aerosmith providing the vocals and it actually samples the track 'Dream On', by Aerosmith. In terms of lyrics this is some of Eminem's best work and he focuses on issues that other people have with his music and he makes the fair point that when someone commits an offence it is down to the offender and not Eminem's music that may happen to listen to. At the end of the day individuals are responsible for their own actions.
