Moses once said: "Honour thy mother and father". It is not to hard, surely? Yet Eminem can't quite seem to manage this. I hate this person. I hate his "music". For me, this is a guy who has made a career out of insulting his mother, swearing his oversized tits off, and pretending to be the black man he really, really wants to be. This review is thus going to be biased. I make no apologies for this. The bottom line is that if you like an artist, you will like what he records. If you don't, you will dislike it. What galls me is that this bloke wants to be Marlyon Manson- He wants to make money by shocking people. In Mansons case, he was at least in some ways original. Eminem is not. Further to the point is that, when he really tries, this bloke can actually be very, very good. On "Marshall Mathers", Eminem introduced us to Stan, a classic video which proved that bad language can have a real place in music, when used in the right place. It was, the best song in 2000, without question. However, other than this, he has produced nothing to convince me that he is actually that good. He wins awards, he sells record and so good luck to him. But what happened to the guy who said "I don't give a fuck about a grammy"("I'm Slim Shady...")-then left in a sulk when his nomination didn't result in an award? For the purpose of this review, I listened to the album owned by my younger brother. For a detailed review of the tracks contained within, read the opinion given by "thebluecomet"-comprehensive and accurate. I will merely comment on the two tracks he released as singles, and let you decide. Track 4-"Cleaning out my closet" is yet another dig at his mother, and the fact that he felt he had to break away. Good for him. The tune is catchy, I suppose, and thus(and did) sell tons of copies, but I really don't want to hear about how much he di
slikes his mother anymore. It is getting boring- more original lyrics, perhaps? The other, track 10-"Without Me", is an utter ego trip, describing how the world needs this guy, and how he is going to sort everything out. Yawn... Now, due to my unashamed bias here, I thought it right to get the opinion of my younger, and rather intoxicated brother. It was his album I used for this review. He is a fan, and he says... "This album, the Eminem show, is I personally believe by far the greatest piece of work that Eminem has produced. In addition to this, in my personal opinion, in this new album he has decided to show his true colours, and show what he is, and it is important that people who are fans of Eminem can see that he can produce music that is extravagant and great. Many people have reason to believe that this artist has slandered his mother and shown total disgrace to the world of mother love. But looking at the life that Eminem had as child he suffered great torment and had to show himself to the doors of civilisation and become the person he is today. People believe that Eminem has made his way up the ladder by insulting his next of kin (MOTHER), but look around: Eminem has made a "lot of money" from doing this." This, I think makes my point- I can't abide this bloke, and most of what he sings is trash, but it appears that I am in the minority. Give me "The Foundations" any day. It all comes down to whether you like this guy or not, I guess...

- 17/11/02 It's not that there shouldn't be a white rapper-it's the fact that he blatently steals his ideas, image and background from the steroetypical "black guy from the ghetto".
Probabl y on the instructions of the music corporations he so noisily reputes. |
