With the music business becoming increasingly manufactured and meaningless, more and more people are looking for an alternative which provides a deeper, more complex form of aural pleasure. This is without a doubt my favourite album. If you want a rollercoaster of emotion, from boiling anger to sublime beauty and calm, this is the album for you. Although commercially not as much as a success as the previous album The Downward Spiral, I think this is more of an artistic achievement. The two disc album is very layered, with excellent songs individually but I recommend playing loud, in one setting. The effect of the songs blending into one another, with repeated tunes in different mediums is excellent and adds to the experience. You may leave the sitting feeling somewhat exhausted however. Despite what the title says it's a masterfully constructed complex hard hitting piece of art. I was completely amazed when I first heard it. To know that this is all done by Trent Reznor himself is just incredible and he proves to be one of the most creative people in rock music ever. Not nearly as depressing as Downward can be.
