Winner of the best lyricist award, voted many artist and music writer's favourite band ever, American Music Club have always been in the shadows. Very little air time has been given to them on radio and TV, yet despite all this the musos still adore them. I was captivated by a glowing review of an AMC box-set of Ep's in the NME. their first album on a major label. It has a slightly more commercial, produced sound than the earlier work. I'd better warn you now - American Music Club you don't really go in for a lot of choruses, and the songs can tend towards the depressing. And when Eitzel's on form, he sounds utterly anguished and desperate (how about, for example, "I've been a mess" about someone rejected in love). But the songs can also very beautiful, as well as emotional. Stand out tracks are "If I had a hammer" (not the song made famous by Trini Lopez!), with it's jangly guitar in the background; "Johnny Mathis' feet"; and ...
