The Good, The Bad and the Sexy - Joe
Advantages: Good vocals, ballads
Disadvantages: Bit samey at times
I have been a fan of Joe for quite a while now and have seen him live twice and both times he was excellent. He's been one of the longest serving of the current R&B artists with his debut album being released in 1993. He has released a total of nine studio albums and has received praise from others in the Music Industry, I should mention that the concerts I went to he was performing with Brian McKnight and Boyz II Men and then Jagged Edge so pretty well known names. His latest album is the subject of this review and the album is called "The Good, The Bad, The Sexy".
**The Good, the Bad, the Sexy**
This album was released on 18th October 2011 and is the ninth studio release from Joe. It was released on the Kedar Entertainment record label and features 11 tracks. The album debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop albums chart. Joe continues his style on this album with some bedroom ballads and songs about love and relationships. The album was recorded between 2009 and 2011. The album features some relatively unknown writers and producers.
This is a catchy slice of R&B, Joe's vocals are smooth and laid back as the drum beats are punchy and the backing music has a relaxed feel. Joe's vocals shine with an assured performance. This track is about when a relationship ends and your partner still wants you and you have to tell them that's it's over. The track moves along quite well and is a fairly decent track but it's not one of his best tracks as it lacks a little spark and the story telling could be a little better.
2.) Time of Your Life
This is a better track, It's a seductive ballad with Joe pledging to treat her right and show his commitment to them. The backing vocals are a nice touch and Joe's expressive vocals work well. This is also a rather catchy track which has a decent chorus and is a decent live track. This track takes things on another level from the opener as it develops well and has a classic Joe feel as much of the best work on the album does have. A decent track.
3.) Almost There
This is one of the best tracks on the album, It's a flowing ballad with some excellent backing vocals and smooth beats with relaxed keyboard tones. Joe's voice is excellent here on this track about the moment when you know you like someone and they like you too, the attraction before the get together. I think this track has one of the best progressions on the album and the Music is also right up there with the best work on the album which means that this track as a whole is up there with the albums best work.
This is an excellent ballad which opens with gentle beats and seductive strings and keys and Joe's smooth vocals blend well with the backing music. The track is about when a relationship is just going round in circles and problems aren't being sorted out and it just all happens again. I think people can relate to this feeling with a relationship that just didn't work out. This is another good track on the album and Joe showcases his smooth vocals well.
5.) Pull My Hair
A rather odd track for a bald man but this is a decent ballad about the woman asking for him to pull her hair when they get down to it. This is raunchy Joe which any fan will know he has form for these kind of tracks. This is a trademark Bedroom track for Joe and is up there with the best tracks on the album because it showcases what Joe does well. His vocals are expressive and the seductive guitar adds an excellent touch. good track.
6.) Dear Joe
This is one of the best tracks on the album, I particularly like the punchy drum beats and the dark keyboard tones. The background strings also add a nice feel and this is a very impressive track all round. Joe shows off his great falsetto on this track which is an emotive track about the woman walking out on Joe leaving just a letter when all seemed to be okay. change the name and this could be about anyone. This is one of the most emotive tracks on the album and also one of the best.
7.) Slow Kisses
This is a seductive track which again showcases his great falsetto, It starts off gently with lovely keyboard tones and catchy beats. Joe's vocals are soft and expressive and this track is about getting it on with someone with slow kisses and just feeling so comfortable relaxing with that special someone. The track progresses well and is an example of what Joe does so well, ie The romantic ballads. The additional rapper adds a nice touch to the track.
8.) Lose Control
This is another raunchy ballad which further enhances Joe's credentials as an R&B lover man. I like the punchy beats which add something else compared to the other beats on the album. Joe's vocals are again very good on this track which again shows that the album is an ideal bedroom playlist. So overall this is Another decent track with some excellent vocals.
This is another decent track, it starts softly with gentle beats and soft keyboard tones. Joe's vocals are expressive and build the track well. This track is about inviting that special someone over to have a romantic night in. Joe's vocals show off a great falsetto and he shows the powerful vocals too. This is up there with the best tracks on the album and is another fine trademark bedroom ballad.
This is an excellent Love Ballad which has an interesting stop start beat and some decent bass hooks which add to the overall soundstage. Joe's vocals are again strong on this track about when your partner's demands are just too much and the relationships ends if it carries on with that. This track really is up there with the best tracks on the album.
11.) Drink Up
This is the final track on the album and starts with a lovely piano part and some seductive sounds, Joe's vocals are very good indeed here as he sings with a graphic nature about love making. This is actually one of the best tracks on the album and is a bonafide bedroom ballad that will prove seductive. An excellent track to end with that brings together the nature of the album.
Although this album can sometimes feel a little samey and doesn't have the same spark as some of his others it is still a very good album which will please Joe fans thanks to those vocals and the unmistakably Joe feel of the album. It's not as instant as his more well known work but it still has some great tracks that will certainly appeal. So overall The Good, the Bad, the Sexy deserves it's place in Joe's discography and will also be fondly remembered as a typical Joe Thomas album, Full of raunchy bedroom ballads, something Joe rather excels at.
Summary: Good album.
