Weezer's 2001 release would be their second self-titled album in their career. It was given a green cover and therefore fans of the band have learnt to refer to these albums not by their titles but by their colours. Weezer's first self-titled release was blue and is therefore 'The Blue Album', whereas the 2001 release is luminous green and therefore funnily enough is 'The Green Album'. It first came to my attention how popular Weezer's 'Green Album' was when my half brother who is more inclined to listening to Hardcore Techno than the rough sounds of Rock was raving on about 'Hash Pipe' at the time of its release. I found it quite strange that he should have ... Read the complete review

As much as a Weezer fan that I am (and I like to consider myself quite the obsessive) I will have to admit that this is by far their worst album. Like the affectionately named "The Blue Album" (Weezer's debut, named for the front cover's colour), and their most recent release "The Red Album" (also named on the same basis), "The Green Album" is unnamed, its title bestowed on it by the fans rather than the band. Matt Sharp, the band's backing vocalist (all those high noted 'ah' of the first two albums belong to him) and bassist, left after Pinkerton. "The Green Album" thus has a new bassist, Mikey Welsh. The sound ... Read the complete review

After writing a review on Pinkerton. I decided to write a final Weezer review on their second best work "The Green Album". It is not the official title for the album but the cover is lime green. The band never bothered to come up with a title. "The Green Album" was released in the summer of last year. I find it fitting to write a retrospective on this album because eleven months after "The Green Album", the band released "Maladroit". Weezer are very much "in" at the moment. But there have been darker times. "The Green Album" was made six years after "Pinkerton". In that six years Rivers (the ... Read the complete review

'Weezer!' I thought. 'Wow Weezer have got a new single out. Jeez I forgot all about Weezer. They were pretty good. I mean 'Buddy Holly' is a great single and has one of the best videos of all time. Oooh and I like the first song off their first album, how did it go, 'My name is Jonas DGUM DGUM DGUM DGUM DGUM DE DGUM!' What's their new single called? Oh 'Hash Pipe' oh dear. That doesn't sound promising.' Several days later whilst melting my brain languishing in front of MTV I saw the video for 'Hash Pipe'. I was very upset. I thought the song was rubbish. An ironic metal riff, a trendy corporate video ... Read the complete review

You gotta love Weezer. After a five-year layoff, they return not with an opus out to explain the hiatus via some sort of major artistic development, but with a 28-minute, 10-song romantic pop album that includes two gems that handily best their early geek anthems "Buddy Holly" and "Undone (The Sweater Song)." Go ahead, call it a retreat. By appearances, it's just that. When we last heard from them, they had just released Pinkerton (1996), the darker, scruffier — and less commercially successful — follow-up to their 1994 self-titled hit debut. Bassist Matt Sharp left in '98 to focus on his other band, the Rentals, and was ... Read the complete review
