As ever with Earle, though, this penchant for siphoning song from the sorest of wounds never feels at all indulgent or self-pitying. A thick vein of self-disgust, mind you, is evident throughout most every verse. The album as a whole is nowhere near as satisfying as any of Earle's previous records - the Big Raawwwk production dates it terribly and several tracks go on far longer than most anyone could ever really summon the patience for. ...more

The Hard Way, Steve Earle's follow up to the wildly successful Copperhead Road, continues that record's melding of hard, Southern rock and stark country-blues-folk, albeit with a much heavier bias towards the former this time around. It is, as Earle himself states, the record that nearly killed him. Lost to the throes of heroin addiction, choking on self-loathing, The Hard Way is... well. Hard, is what it is. Honest. Bitter. Stark. Disturbing. The opening The Other Kind sets out the stall with a ragged, naked, molasses-black rumination on Earle's state of mind and body. If you've heard some songs by RF then I'm sure you've heard THE best ones Everything really about this album, there were only four good tracks .
