      Achtung Groove!

Compilations seem to have got ridiculously good over the last decade, no longer is it only mediocre monthly compilations of what's in the charts that make the shelves but record labels are releasing some awesome compilations of old school tunes, some of which were even rare at the time of the release.

Somehow I came across The In-Kraut collection recently, the name appealed and the idea of getting to know some decent German tracks seemed a good one. I used to just think of their musical output as dodgy disco tunes of the 90s (Haddaway etc), metal and hard rock (Helloween, Blind Guardian, Scorpions etc) and a bit of electronic music (Kraftwerk) but I recently got into their 60s and 70s progressive rock scene known as Krautrock in the form of bands like Can, Amon Duul II and Tangerine Dream.

When I came across this compilation of "hip shaking grooves made in Germany 1966-74", I just knew it was going to be good. The album starts off immensely strong with what is probably my favourite track of the album "From Here On It Got Rough", an awesome translated version of a Hildegard Knef hit, her manly vocals and excellent lyrics make this chanson a really enjoyable hit.

The album is pretty varied, some tracks sound garagey whilst the majority are funky, songs like 'Marihuana Mantra" are slightly hypnotic, "Why Don't You Play The Organ Man" is instrumental and "Berlin" by Heidi Bruehl sees a well-known pop artist expanding her territory and producing a sublime track.

The majority of tracks are sang in English, the releases starting just two decades after WW2, were never going to appeal worldwide much if sung in German, there's also numerous Americanised German artists like Bill Lawrence making an appearance on the album and perhaps more interestingly French ye-ye singer France Gall has a release sung in German but with a notably French accent.

This album has style and panache and it's worth listening to, there's some great tunes on here and it is definitely funky. I'll definitely be checking out the other volumes of these releases.
