      Elvis at his best

With the 30th anniversary of Elvis' death coming up I have been inspired to go back to one of my most favourite possessions - the 5 CD box set entitled THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL - THE COMPLETE 50'S MASTERS. This collection was originally released in 1992 and was the first time that the full collection of this important martial was collected together. It came in a full-size box, the same dimensions as would have fit 5 vinyl albums. Along with the CDs there was a wonderful oversize book and a collection of stamps. The book contained full session details from the 1950s and a biography written by Peter Guralnick, who has also written the definitive 2-volume biography of Elvis.

The set has been re-released a number of times but never in this full-size box. At one point I also owned one of these re-releases, which was just the collection of CDs but I sold that on. It is also possible to buy all of the music from this set on Amazon as mp3 files for less than £14.

Bu what about the music? After all, that is the purpose of anyone buying this set. Well in total there are 140 tracks including 14 performances which had not been previously released at that time. My favourite tracks are the early ones recorded by Elvis in the mid-1950s at Sun Studios in Memphis. THAT'S ALL RIGHT is often considered to be the song that kick-started rock and roll music and it still packs a punch nearly 60 years later. Other stand-out tracks include MYSTERY TRAIN and HEARTBREAK HOTEL. Unlike Elvis' work in the 1960s there is little here that doesn't ooze quality.

This collection is highly recommended, even if you only get the mp3 version from Amazon.

      A collectors dream!

Elvis`s awesome career started out way back in the 50`s and this 5 CD album takes us way back to those days and offers a full set of all the "masters" that the great man recorded in those days as well as a huge offering of bonus material and extras such as live performances of the tracks alongside their recorded versions, alternate takes and interviews.

This album offers a real inside look at who Elvis really was both as a man and as a recording artist and it brings some of the king`s earlier music to many who will not have heard it previously. It is a great mixture of very well known Elvis tracks as well as the much rarer.

Amongst the well known tracks are the likes of, Hound dog and blue suede shoes which are probably two of Elvis`s best known rock tracks and these run alongside tracks such as Poor boy and others that non Elvis fans have probably never heard.

The set starts right back when Elvis recorded some tracks for his mother in a studio session he paid for and where he was discovered by the late Sam Philips and then carries on to the tracks Elvis first recorded as a paid artist that took him to super stardom.

A brilliant selection of early Elvis tracks that show off his raw talent and a must have album for all fans and collectors.

I will not give a track list in this particular review as I have in others due to it being 5 discs this would take a lot of space and offer little info, and I know how some people hate lists!

The King Of Rock N Roll

THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL is a 5 CD set of all of the 'masters' that Elvis Presley recorded during the 1950s, along with quite a bit of bonus material, including alternate takes, live performances, and an interview. This set goes right from the beginning, with the songs he recorded in his first ever personal recording session, supposedly for his mother, before he was discovered by the late Sam Phillips. This 1950s set takes us up to the music he made prior to entering the army in 1958, after which he made no more music (recorded in the studio at least, he did of course sing for personal pleasure) until leaving the army in the 1960s.

Included are all of the well-known tracks, such as Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes, but the biggest joy is discovering some great music which you didn't even know existed, such as the lovely 'Poor Boy' from the LOVE ME TENDER soundtrack.

This is an essential purchase, not only for Elvis fans, but also for anyone with an interest in the genesis of rock 'n' roll music.
